Haoran Li (Chinese: 李昊冉; born 1986) is a Chinese conductor. He is Principal Conductor of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and Permanent Guest Conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre.
Biography
[edit]Li was born into a musical family and began studying piano at an early age. He began studying conducting with Xu Xin at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He entered the conservatory's conducting department in 2005, where he studied with Xia Xiaotang.
In 2007, Li participated in a conducting programme associated with Seiji Ozawa in Japan. Later that year, he received instruction from Daniel Barenboim during the Beijing Music Festival.
After graduating from the Central Conservatory of Music in 2010, Li continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, where his teachers included Christian Ehwald and Hans-Dieter Baum. He completed the Konzertexamen in orchestral conducting in 2017.
Li also participated in conducting programmes at the Aspen Music Festival and School in the United States, the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy in Japan, and the Péter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation in Hungary. In 2012 and 2013, he was selected for the Dirigentenwerkstatt Interaktion Berlin programme， which supported by principal players of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Munich Philharmonic.
Music career
[edit]In 2014, Li won first prize at the International Conducting Competition “Jeunesses Musicales” Bucharest. He subsequently appeared at the George Enescu International Festival and worked with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2018, Li received the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France Prize and the Audience Prize at the fourth Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris. In 2019, he was a finalist at the International Besançon Competition for Young Conductors. During the 2019–20 season, he served as an assistant conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2022, Li received third prize in the conducting category of the Rachmaninoff International Competition for Pianists, Composers and Conductors in Moscow. In the same year, he appeared at the Festival Verdi in Parma with Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini. He also conducted the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra in Moscow with pianist Denis Matsuev and soprano Aida Garifullina in a concert broadcast internationally from the Moscow Philharmonic Hall.
In 2023, Li performed with orchestras and opera companies in Europe and Asia, including the Royal Danish Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. He also collaborated with the Royal Danish Opera on several productions.
During the 2023–24 season, Li participated in the Igor Stravinsky Festival and conducted the opening concert of the Mariinsky White Nights Brass Festival. He also made his debut with the Russian National Orchestra and conducted Puccini's Tosca at the Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre. In June 2024, the Mariinsky Theatre appointed Li as its Permanent Guest Conductor, making him the first Asian conductor to hold the position.
During the 2024–25 season, Li conducted opera and ballet productions including Verdi's Macbeth and La forza del destino, Puccini's Turandot, Mozart's The Magic Flute, Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle, and The Miraculous Mandarin. His symphonic engagements included Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben and works by Gustav Mahler and Dmitri Shostakovich. In July 2025, Li served as a rehearsal conductor at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland.
During the 2025–26 season, Li conducted the opening concert of the 23rd Asia–Siberia–Europe International Festival of Chamber and Orchestral Music in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. In December 2025, he conducted a production of the Chinese opera Mulan Psalm in connection with the 2025 Understanding China International Conference in Guangzhou. He continued his work with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, including a concert commemorating the 80th anniversary of the death of Béla Bartók, as well as New Year concerts in Beijing.
