The Hellaverse is a shared fictional universe created by Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano for the adult animated streaming series Hazbin Hotel and web series Helluva Boss. It is based on religious depictions of the underworld and comprised of the Seven Rings of Hell.

The sinner-populated Pentagram City within the Pride Ring is the primary setting of Hazbin Hotel, where Charlie Morningstar, daughter of Lilith and Lucifer, attempts to redeem sinners by helping hem earn a place in Heaven. Helluva Boss follows Blitzo's assassination company I.M.P (Immediate Murder Professionals), based in the Pride Ring's Imp City, as they travel to many of the Rings of Hell, and use a book belonging to a powerful demon named Stolas to enter Earth and hunt humans on order of clients in Hell.

Development

edit

Although the development for the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel took two and a half years,[1] Medrano had been developing the universe since she was a teenager. She based the universe on the stories she learned of as a Presbyterian as she grew up. In particular, the universe serves as an adaptation for some existing religious texts.[2]

History

edit

Hell's origins

edit

Thousands of years ago, there existed a golden-gated city known as Heaven ruled by angels, beings of pure light who were devoted to good and protected all from evil. As the angels expanded the universe, they created Adam and Lilith from the dust of Earth as equal beings and the first of humankind. However, Adam attempted to gain control over Lilith, but Lilith refused to submit to him and fled the Garden of Eden.

Lilith then found an angel named Lucifer, who fantasized of ideas that the elder angels of Heaven saw as dangerous to the order of Earth. Both rebellious dreamers, they fell deeply in love, and they wished to share the magic of free will with humanity. They offered the fruit of knowledge to Eve, Adam's new bride, which Eve accepted. This allowed evil to find its way to Earth, creating a new realm of sin and shattering the order Heaven had built to maintain.

As a result, Heaven cast Lucifer and Lilith into this new realm known as Hell. While Lucifer lost his will to dream, Lilith empowered demon-kind with her voice and music, growing Hell's power as the population of demon-kind grew. To control the demons' unrest, Heaven decided to send an army of Exorcist angels to Hell for a yearly Extermination of sinners, humans who were sent to Hell via divine judgement after their death. As part of an agreement between Lucifer and Heaven, Lucifer would not interfere with the Extermination, and in turn, Hellborn demons were granted immunity.

Over the thousands of years of Hell's existence, it has developed a geography consisting of 7 distinct rings, each ruled by old and powerful royal demons known as the Seven Deadly Sins. It has also developed a variety of Hellborn demon species, in addition to the sinners who reside in the Pride Ring, such as the Ars Goetia, royal demons directly underneath the Sins, and lower-class demons such as imps and hellhounds.

The Hazbin Hotel

edit

Sometime later before present day, Lucifer and Lilith, who served as the King and Queen of Hell, had a child named Charlie, the Princess of Hell.

Lucifer and Lilith separated for unknown reasons, and Lilith went missing for 7 years. Charlie carried on her parents' dream and created the Hazbin Hotel, a place for demons to redeem themselves to Heaven, although it was never proven to actually work.

Charlie brought this idea to Adam, who had become the leader of the Exorcists. Adam rejected the idea, and revealed that the Extermination would now occur every six months. This was due to one of the Exorcists being killed by a demon for the first time by unknown means.

Charlie later introduced the Hazbin Hotel to the court of Heaven and the seraphim. The proceeding revealed that the angels do not know the criteria for a human to be admitted into Heaven. The court found that the possibility of a human soul to be redeemed was impossible. Adam also stated that the upcoming Extermination would target the Hazbin Hotel first.

Charlie, the inhabitants of the hotel, and cannibal sinners of Cannibal Town defended the Hazbin Hotel from the Exorcists after discovering that angels could be killed by their own angelic weapons. She received help from her father, Lucifer, after Adam threatened to kill her, breaking the Hellborn immunity agreement and allowing Lucifer to interfere. This also resulted in Adam's death and the Exorcists' defeat.

One of the inhabitants of the Hazbin Hotel, Sir Pentious, who was seemingly exterminated by Adam during the attack, was sent to Heaven for unknown reasons, becoming the first sinner-redeemed angel to ever exist. Adam's lieutenant, Lute, took Adam's position as leader of the Exorcists. In addition, it was revealed that Lilith had been residing in Heaven due to some unknown deal made with the Exorcists.
