Biography

He studied at the Perceval school in Chatou, a school using the Steiner-Walforf pedagogy where he met certain classmates who would remain important people in his life, such as the violist Frantz Loriot. He began classical cello studies with Denise Cherret, and also learned jazz at EDIM and the Montreuil Conservatory. He obtained a degree in musicology and a CAPES in music at the University of Paris 8 and trained in improvisation during workshops and master classes with notably Sophia Domancich, Didier Levallet, Régis Huby, Vincent Courtois, Ernst Reijseger, Barre Phillips, or Joëlle Léandre.

Hugues Vincent's influences are very diverse. They range from Bach to Bartok to the cellist Tom Cora who recorded the album Scrabbling at the Lock with the Dutch experimental post-punk group The Ex in 1991.

After playing guitar in the punk band Les Putois, he founded the string ska group Le Pélican Frisé in Nanterre in 1992 with Piéro on guitar and then vocals, Maryline on drums, Christo on vocals and Julien on vocals. low. Two years later they had their first concert. Between 1999 and 2013 the group released 5 albums and saw the succession of numerous musicians including Hugues' brother, Marc (Polo), Frantz known as Krank, Sylvain on drums, Terence on keyboards and clarinet...

But Hugues Vincent's musical horizons are open and he is involved in different projects such as Bobun (with Frantz Loriot), Dareda, Ganjin (with Frantz Loriot and drummer Yuko Oshima), Mam'Sika, Mop Meuchine, The Octopus , Tilbol with guitarist Pascal Maupeu and drummer Colin Neveux, the Trio Yasaï, or his last project, the group Wooonta.

For Hugues Vincent, music has no borders. He plays with Russian musicians like Vladimir Kudryavtsev and Alexei Borisov. But also in Taiwan with the musicians of the group Wooonta or with the Algerian musician Yacine Kheddaoui. He spent the last part of his life between France and Japan where he collaborated with many Japanese musicians such as Ryoji Hojito, Maki Hachiya, Yuta Yokoyama, Shota Koyama, Takumi Seino, Morishige Yasumune, and his partner the saxophonist and clarinetist. Kumi Iwase. The duo is notably a guest on the show Tapage Nocturne on Radio France.

But Hugues Vincent is not only a musician, he is also a teacher and educator. He gives music and music theory lessons throughout his life and transmits his passion for music, but also his way of experiencing intense, demanding and uncompromising music. He teaches in particular at IMEP - Paris College of Music from 2016.

He died on January 9, 2024 in Montreuil at the age of 49 from a brain tumor. Many tributes have been paid to him around the world, notably at La guillotine in Montreuil on March 22, 2024 or on France Musique radio in the show À l'improviste on January 21, 2024
