The iPhone Ultra is an upcoming foldable smartphone that is going to be designed, developed, manufactured, and marketed by Apple as part of its iPhone series. To be created by Apple Inc., It will be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro at the Apple Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, on September 8, 2026,[4][5][6] and it is going to use an OLED folding display, Touch ID instead of Face ID, a liquid metal hinge, along with an iPad-like interface. It will be the first iPhone to be completely developed under the guidance of John Ternus and the last iPhone to be overseen by Tim Cook.[7]

The device will be capable of being folded open like a book to expose a 7.8-inch tablet-sized flexible display, while its front will contain a smaller “cover” display, intended for accessing the device without opening it.

History

[edit]

Rumors and development

[edit]

The technology behind the iPhone Ultra was in development for almost a decade, starting as far back as 2017,[8][9] which was originally going to be released in the year 2020.[8][9] Early signs of development were emerged,[10][11] and suggested that Apple was testing the hinge for the foldable iPhone that was originally going to be released in the year 2022,[12] but Jon Prosser stated that it will not see the foldable iPhone in 2022.[13]

Early reports about the foldable iPhone began circulating as early as 2025.[14][15] First signs of the new iPhone would include a Touch ID sensor instead of Face ID.[16] The name of the phone was originally presumed to be the iPhone Fold due to it having a OLED folding display, but it was later reported in April 2026 when it was revealed that the iPhone Fold would be known as the "iPhone Ultra" instead of "iPhone Fold".[17][18]

Multiple reports and features for the foldable iPhone were also known, from color options,[19][20] to vapor chambers,[21][22] to dummy units, suggesting that Apple was planning to "stay away from fun colors" and stick to more traditional space gray/black and silver/white finishes.[23] Other reports included a liquid metal hinge for the folding display,[24] references to the foldable iPhone in the beta release of iOS 27,[25][26][27] and adding landscape mode support to Apple apps.[28] Renders for the foldable iPhone were unveiled a few days later, revealing the new design.[29][30] Prosser stated that real split-screen multitasking is coming for the foldable iPhone,[29] and claims that Apple is preparing a thin foldable with a nearly invisible crease and a hinge mechanism reportedly imbued with Apple’s trademark obsession with over-engineering.[31] Dimensions for the foldable iPhone were also known.[31] A new resale value study suggests that the foldable iPhone could lose $1,292 of its value within a year on the market.[32][33] SellCell analyzed the 12-month resale from flagship brands like Apple, Samsung, Google, Motorola, and OnePlus.[32]

In July 2026, references to the foldable iPhone were revealed in the beta release of iOS 27.[34][35][36]

In August 2026, color options via the phones camera protectors were revealed ahead of launch,[37][38][39] along with screen protectors for the foldable iPhone soon after.[40] Early hands-on impressions of the iPhone Ultra were known, with one mentioning that it fits in your pocket and the feel and durability of its hinge.[41][42]

Delay and production

[edit]

In March 2026, it was rumored that the foldable iPhone would launch after the iPhone 18 Pro,[43][44] later reported to be a false rumour.[45][46] The release of the foldable iPhone was delayed due to design and manufacturing issues,[47][48] and it suffered manufacturing problems with the hinge failing Apple's quality control standards.[49][50] However, it was later reported that the foldable iPhone launch delay was a false rumor, and it was rumored that the phone could launch in September or October.[51][52] Early reports of production began to surface in June 2026, with components being supplied with the manufacturing of the OLED displays for the foldable iPhone.[53][54] Apple has reportedly signed a three-year contract with Samsung to produce a supply of OLED displays for the foldable iPhone.[55][56] Multiple reports suggested that the 3D-printed hinge problem had been resolved and the phone could be ready for a September launch.[57][58] Production of the foldable iPhone began to surface in July 2026, where Apple would need to ramp foldable iPhone production to 10 million foldable iPhones ahead of its unveiling.[59][60] Soon after, mass production of the foldable iPhone had started,[61][62] along with vapor chamber production shortly after,[63][64] suggesting that Apple would shortly release a phone with an OLED folding display, an A20 chip, an Apple C2 modem, and a Touch ID power button.[61][62] Multiple reports suggested that the foldable iPhone would suffer production hurdles for final mass-production adjustments.[65][66]
