Indian Secular Largest Assembly of Maharashtra (abbr: ISLAM) is a political party based in Maharashtra.[1][2][3] It was founded by Shaikh Aasif Shaikh Rashid, a former Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 2024 following a split in Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar.[4][5] The Party was registered with the State Election Commission of Maharashtra on 17 January 2024.[6][7]
History
editIn 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, Shaikh Aasif Shaikh Rashid, the founder of ISLAM was the only candidate representing the Party from the Malegaon Central Assembly constituency. Mufti Mohammed Ismail Abdul Khaleque, a candidate of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen defeated Shaikh Aasif with a margin of 162 votes.[8]
Controversies
editLocal leaders and religious leaders of Malegaon asked the party leaders to change it's name which makes an abbreviation of ISLAM to any other name which is not same with Islam, a religion. In this regard, All India Tanzeem Ulama-e-Islam, All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Huffaz Malegaon urged Party leaders to change the name of the Party.[9]
