The Israeli Invasion of Lebanon is a currently ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah of Lebanon. On the 30th of September IDF officially announced the beginning of ground operations in southern Lebanon.[1] The incursion comes as a aftermath to the assassination of long time Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on 27th September and Pager Blasts conducted by Israel between 17 to 18 September,[2] which killed a dozen of Hezbollah operatives and injured over 3,000 including civilians.

There were continuous tensions between Israel and Hezbollah after the October 7th Attacks by Hamas, as a result of which Israel decimated the entire Gaza Strip killing nearly 50,000 people including 17,000+ children and severely injuring over 93,000. Since October 7th Hezbollah was also constantly targeting IDF forces diverting their attention from Gaza. Israel has conducted many strikes inside Lebanon since October 7th 2023, but September 30th 2024 marks the bloodiest strikes on Lebanon is two decades with over 1,500 strikes in just 2 days.
History
editAfter October 7th Attacks, Israel responded with a military offensive in Gaza in which more than 41,500 Palestinians have been killed[3]. Nearly the entire population of 2.3 million people in the enclave have been displaced from their homes and much of the territory has been laid to waste.
Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, joined the conflict by initiating attacks on northern Israel and the Golan Heights. Since then, Hezbollah and Israel have been involved in cross-border military exchanges that have displaced entire communities in Israel and Lebanon, with significant damage to buildings and land along the border. From 7 October 2023 to 20 September 2024, there were 10,200 cross border attacks, of which Israel launched 8,300. The strikes have approximately displaced 96,000 Israelis and 1 million Lebanese. The last time Israel invaded southern Lebanon and engaged in ground combat with Hezbollah was during the month-long 2006 Lebanon War.
