From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ivan Kulbakov (born September 18, 1996 in Homel, Belarus) is a professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the Republic of Tatarstan's Neftyanik (Oiler) hockey club based in the city of Almetyevsk. The team plays in the Supreme Hockey League of Eurasia. Kulbakov, who was taught by Belarusian coach Aleksandr Shumidub, has been recognized as the League's best goalie multiple times in the 2019-2020 season. The League determines the best goalie on a weekly basis.

Career

[edit]

He is a member of the Belarus national ice hockey team and plays for the nation at the World Championships.

In 2018, he signed his first one-year NHL contract with the Vancouver Canucks via his then-agent Daniel Milstein. He is no longer eligible to play for college teams in North America because he had already signed his professional contract with the NHL in 2018.

In the season of 2018-19 Kulbakov also played for the Utica Comets professional ice hockey team based in Utica, New York, working alongside Thatcher Demko and Richard Bachman. He abruptly returned to Belarus ahead of the 2019-20 season due to personal reasons.

Kulbakov has been playing hockey since the age of four. In 2016, at the age of 20, he played for Belarus at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in Helsinki, Finland.

His fascination with hockey began when he found an old hockey stick in his grandparents' barn on the outskirts of Homel. Before that, his favorite game was catching a tennis ball that his grandfather would throw. Hockey offered a way of focusing on developing his catching skills to perfection and he would often refuse to leave an ice skating rink as a kid, so much so that the family moved to an apartment across the street from the rink. Kulbakov has said in multiple interviews with Russian and Belarusian media that he sees hockey in general and the role of a goalie in particular as both a show and a highly intellectual game, which involves a great deal of analysis of many factors, including psychological aspects of players and laws of physics. He has always trained as a goalie. His dream is to win a Stanley Cup.
