Joseph P. "JP" Errico is an engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, former patent attorney, and research scientist whose work has focused on spinal medical devices and non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS). He co-founded the medical-device companies SpineCore and electroCore and served as chief executive officer of both.[1] His work on electroCore's non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation technology has been covered by IEEE Spectrum and medical-device trade publications.[2][3]
Education and early career
[edit]Errico received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990. He received a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering and materials science and a Juris Doctor from Duke University in 1993.[1][3] He subsequently worked as a patent attorney.[3][4]

[edit]Errico co-founded SpineCore in 2001 and served as its chief executive officer and a director until 2004.[1] The company developed the FlexiCore lumbar artificial disc and CerviCore cervical artificial disc.[5]
In 2004, Stryker Corporation announced an agreement to acquire SpineCore for an upfront cash payment of $120 million, with up to an additional $240 million tied to regulatory and commercialization milestones and royalties.[5] NJBIZ later described SpineCore as having been started by orthopedic surgeon Thomas Errico and JP Errico, whom it described as an engineer and patent attorney.[4] After the acquisition, JP Errico served as general manager of Stryker Spine's Motion Preservation Unit until 2007.[1]
electroCore and vagus nerve stimulation
[edit]Errico co-founded electroCore in 2005 with Thomas J. Errico and physician Peter S. Staats. He served as electroCore's chief executive officer from 2010 to 2016, chairman of its board from 2013 to 2018, and chief science and strategy officer from 2016 to 2019.[1]
The company developed gammaCore, a handheld device designed to stimulate the vagus nerve non-invasively through the neck. A 2013 profile in Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry discussed Errico's engineering background and the development of the device.[3] In a 2015 IEEE Spectrum feature on non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation, Samuel K. Moore described the engineering of electroCore's system and discussed the technology with Errico and other researchers.[2]
A 2020 article in the journal Neuromodulation acknowledged Errico and Bruce Simon for significant contributions to the original development and subsequent clinical development of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation.[6]
In 2014, The Wall Street Journal reported that electroCore had raised $50 million for its non-invasive nerve-stimulation technology and identified Errico as the company's chief executive.[7] In 2018, electroCore completed an initial public offering that raised approximately $78 million and listed the company on the Nasdaq under the ticker ECOR; at the time, Errico was serving as chief science and strategy officer.[8]
Research and writing
[edit]In 2025, Errico joined the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) as a senior research scientist.[9] His later research has included work on autonomic regulation, aging, neuroinflammation, and neurodevelopment.[10]
Errico's book The Vagus-Immune Connection: Harness Your Vagus Nerve to Manage Stress, Prevent Immune Dysregulation, and Avoid Chronic Disease was published by Ulysses Press in 2024.[11]
