Jakob Stark ( born in 1982) is a German cinematographer.
Career
editJakob Stark studied film in Italy and graduated with honors, creating two diploma films.[1][2][3] One of his teachers was Sophie Maintigneux. For his graduation film, Guanape Sur, which won awards inter alia at the IFF San Sebastian, Stark got a Camerimage Golden Frog nomination.[4][5] Jakob Stark made his feature film debut with Dal Profondo, which won inter alia an award at the IFF Rome and was featured at film festivals in Turin, IDFA, and Visions du Réel. The film also received a David Di Donatello Award nomination.[6]
A few years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Stark shot the feature documentary film Half-Life in Fukushima/Demi-Vie à Fukushima on 16mm in the no-go area. The film was screened at film festivals such as Visions du Réel, Hot Docs, and the SFIFF.[7] At the Berlinale, three documentary feature films premiered — Dream Boat (Arri Amira Award nominee), Kids in the Spotlight, and Überall wo wir sind (which won in its section) — where Stark was responsible for the cinematography.[8][9][10]
His cinematography for Riafn, winner at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, was awarded First Prize Best Cinematography at the Oscar-qualifying Rhode Island Film Festival 2019.[11][12]
In the winter of 2019/2020, Stark spent three months on board the German icebreaker Polarstern as a cinematographer for the MOSAiC Expedition. Based on this expedition the prime-time films Expedition Arktis (nominated for the Grimme-Preis) and A Year in the Arctic Ice (Grierson Awards 2022, Jackson Wild Award – finalist 2022) were produced.[13][14][15][16]
Stark was responsible and awarded for the cinematography of the entire six-part series Art Crimes (52min/90min).
Jakob Stark works in both the fictional and documentary genres or combines them. His portfolio also includes video art, commercials, and music videos. At the age of 18, he shot the feature film Vier Könige, drei Regeln, which premiered at the International Hofer Filmtage.[17] The short film Era Ieri was the opening film of the Venice International Film Critics' Week in Venice.[18] The short film The Hedgehog's Dilemma had its premiere at the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films.[19] Music videos were created for the rapper Ufo361 (Ryu,[20] Daniel Lee,[21] Favorite Artist[22]) and the techno DJ Kobosil (Full of Fire[23]). As a cinematographer, he created commercials, such as for Mercedes.[24] Under the label Fire On Air, Stark produces art films.[25]
Stark has collaborated with artists and directors such as Christin Berg, Patrick Daughters, Philipp Grieß, Max von Gumpenberg, Hannes Lang, Mark Olexa, Valentina Pedicini, Andreas Pichler, and Stefano Strocchi.
In 2019, Stark served on the jury of the Filmfestival im Stadthafen alongside Andreas Dresen and Jan Soldat.[26]
He is a recipient of the German Camera Award (Deutscher Kamerapreis).[27][28]
