Jay Basra is an Ulster Unionist Party politician (Born 2004). Jay Basra has been active in youth politics, campaigning with the Young Unionists. [1] [2]

Jay Basra ran as the UUP Candidate for Mid Ulster on July 4th 2024, receiving just under 5% of the vote[3]. During his campaign he would receive racist abuse and threats from anonymous users online on several occasions.[4] He would go on to speak out against this abuse and challenge it while on air with William Crawley on BBC talkback. [5] He would receive abuse again after the election in response to a social media post about the Twelfth of July holiday.[6]

The Belfast Newsletter explains that Jay Basra is a native of Cookstown, attending his local Presbyterian Church, challenging the allegations that he is a Muslim or an immigrant. [7]

He is a former student of Cookstown High School and is currently studying at Queen's University Belfast. [8]
