In 1953, Funaki began his career in the New Zealand Resident Commissioner's Office, serving in roles in the Education, Health, Justice, and Treasury departments. He was appointed as a public defender in 1975.[1]

In 1996, Funaki was elected as the Speaker of the 9th Niue Legislative Assembly.

In 2020, Funaki was awarded the Niue Public Service Medal in recognition of his more than 36 years of public service in the Niuean government.
