Joseph John Vettukattil (born May 21, 1959) is a British-American pediatric cardiologist known for his significant contributions to congenital cardiology and research in pediatric heart diseases.[1] He currently serves as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Innovations (IAMRAI) in Hyderabad, India, and holds the positions of Betz Endowed Chair of Congenital Cardiology Research at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, and Research Professor at Michigan Technological University, Michigan, USA.[2]
Early Life
editJoseph Vettukattil was born in Kerala, India. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Calicut University in 1979 and earned his MBBS from St. John's Academy of Medical Sciences, Bangalore University in 1986. He obtained his MD in Pediatrics from the same institution in 1992 and completed his DNB in Pediatrics in 1991. He was one of the first certified pediatric cardiologists in the UK) (Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK, 2000).[3] He furthered his qualifications with certifications from the Royal College of Physicians in London in 2000, FRCPCH from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2001, and FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians in 2005.
Career
editVettukattil began his medical career in India before moving to the UK in 1992. His work on developing a computer-guided screening tool for children under five with IIT Madras earned the Best Research Award by the Indian Association of Pediatrics in 1993.[4] In the UK, he worked at the Royal Brompton National Heart & Lung Institute and later joined Southampton University Hospitals, where he became Chief of Cardiology and Director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory. In 2013, he was invited to the USA to head the Pediatric Cardiology department at the Congenital Heart Center, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Michigan, where he developed a world-class congenital heart program. He was granted special O1 VISA status as an alien of extraordinary ability and received special registration from the Michigan government.[5]
After emigrating to the UK, he began his career at the Royal Brompton National Heart & Lung Institute. In 1995, he joined Southampton University Hospitals and was awarded the first UK 5-year training fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in 1997. Following this, he joined University Hospital Southampton, where he worked and lead the unit until 2013. Prof. Vettukattil played a pivotal role in developing the Congenital Heart Center at Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Michigan, USA, where he served as co-director and division chief. He has been involved in various international collaborations and has contributed significantly to the field of congenital cardiology through research and education.[6] His reputation brought patients from other centers for personalized interventions leading to pioneering procedures for complex heart defects.
