Kama Tala (Help:IPA/English: ǀɑɱɑ θɑɫɑ) is an American born songwriter, guitarist, and producer best known for writing rock n roll, gospel-laced,[1] surf pop [2] music since 2021. Kama was born in Chicago, Illinois learning his craft from watching fellow musicians in the Chicago music scene. Kama is known for his crafty guitar work, catchy indie-pop vocal approach and the soulful[3] lyrics. [4]
Beginnings (2019–2021)
editOn March 7th 2021, Kama Tala released his debut album Before the Wind[5] in 2021 with independent producer Tomek R. in 2018.[6] [7] Before the Wind known for the lacing religious undertones, pop melodies[8] and acoustic guitar spent was completed in 2019 & 2020. Kama Tala explained that Before the Wind was an album explaining the cycle of a day from start to finish. The first track titled 'Awake'[9] and what was supposed to be the last track titled 'Starlight' exemplify that point. Kama explained at the 11th hour he decided to make the last song 'Roads',[10] for symbolic purposes and now would head elsewhere.[11] [12]
Kama Tala continued to write and record music throughout 2020 and 2021 with another producer known only as Zilchman. With an arsenal of songs in his pocket Kama Tala would release 5 more singles in 2021 with producer Zilchman[13]. Kama wrote these songs during the Covid pandemic and while struggling like millions of us around the world, he wanted to write positive upbeat and hopeful music. [14] Out of those singles came Kama's first commercially successful single 'Honore' [15] which was written about the street his great grandfather grew up on [16] in the city of Chicago in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. With the help and last minute brainstorming with producer Zilchman, Kama wrote a jangle-pop Caribbean influenced song about longing for the days of freedom to be outside on the streets again, mingling with others and this positive vibe caught the ear of hundreds of thousands of listeners around the world who needed that hopeful message during the COVID-19 pandemic.[17] Kama's plan to just try and make people a little bit happier with a song paid off and 'Honore'[18] found its way onto local Chicago radio stations and spread from the streets of Chicago to Austin, Texas [19]where a year later 'Honore' was nominated and would win a silver W.A.M. Award[20] in 2022 for best song in the world music category. Since the release of 'Honore' in March of 2021 its accumulated over 200,000 streams on Spotify alone and has been reviewed by dozens of blogs music reviews, music podcasting events, and radio stations across the world.[18]
Time Out (2022)

Kama's music in 2023-2024, still focused primarily around guitar based pop, heartfelt lyrics, soul/religious undertones[21][22][23] has skyrocketed Kama Tala to the next level of success internationally, especially with his his latest hit, The Sentinel.[24] The most recent songs have brought new soul in his music.[25] Kama Tala won another W.A.M. award in 2023 in the 'Best Love Song'[26] category for his song 'Inside & Out (Everything in Between)'. Kama was most recently spotted at The Godfrey Hotel in June of 2024 at a rare performance[27] with the Art of Giving Foundation to help raise money for school supplies for Chicago Public Schools and can be found at this link.
