Kehillas Ohr HaTorah is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue located in the Kemp Mill neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland. It was founded in 2011 by former students of the Yeshiva of Greater Washington. The synagogue serves a close-knit community and is led by Rabbi Michoel Frank.[1][2]

History

edit

Kehillas Ohr HaTorah was established in 2011, with its first Shabbos morning minyan held on November 3, 2012, in the University Towers Condominium Party Room. Initially, the synagogue rented the space for three hours each Shabbos morning and stored all seforim and furniture in a member's van during the week. The congregation soon expanded to full Shabbos minyanim and secured a permanent lease for the room.[1]

In August 2014, Rabbi Michoel Frank was appointed as the Rav and Mora D'Asra. By January 2016, the synagogue had outgrown its space and moved to the Kemp Mill Shopping Center. Later that year, they purchased a section of the playground from the Silver Spring Jewish Center and began construction on a permanent building, which was completed and occupied on May 12, 2017.[1]

Community and activities

edit

Kehillas Ohr HaTorah is known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere. The congregation consists of approximately 140 member families. The synagogue emphasizes inspiring and focused, no-talking prayer services and offers numerous learning programs under the guidance of Rabbi Frank. The synagogue also has an active N'shei committee that organizes programs and shiurim for the women of the community.[1]
