editBrig. Gen. McElroy was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, June 1994, through the Army Reserve Officer Training Program at Fort Valley State University, Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Fort Valley State University, a Master of Applied Social Science in Public Administration from Florida A&M University, and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University.

McElroy has served in the U.S. Army as an Air Defense Artillery Officer. His early assignments included the following:

Transition to Air Force Reserve
In 2000, McElroy moved to the Air Force Reserve, and since then he has served in a variety of positions, to include:
- Deputy Commander, 379th Expeditionary Maintenance Group, Al Udeid AB, Qatar.
Commander, 512th Maintenance Group, Dover AFB, Delaware
Mobilization Assistant to the Director of Logistics, Civil Engineering, Force Protection and Nuclear Integration, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.
As of October 2023, McElroy serves as Commander of Force Generation Center, Air Force Reserve Command, Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. He oversees direction, provides visibility and accountability for approximately 70,000 Air Force Reserve forces.

editMcElroy graduated from Fort Valley State University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, and in 2001 he earned a Master of Applied Social Science degree in Public Administration from Florida A&M University.
