Kraken is an energy technology platform developed by Octopus Energy Group, launched in 2017. The platform optimizes green energy generation, manages energy networks, and improves field operations. It connects over 160,000 devices and manages 42 GW of contracted power. Kraken offers customer service features such as a Customer Information System (CIS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and billing functionalities.

History

edit

Kraken platform was established in 2017 as a subsidiary of Octopus Energy.[2][3] In 2018, Kraken was selected by Hanwha Energy Retail Australia (Nectr) to provide billing, customer relationship management (CRM), and other technology services to support its launch into the Australian retail energy market.[4][5][6]

The platform operates on Amazon's cloud computing service,[7][8] was first licensed to Good Energy in late 2019 for an initial three-year term, to manage its 300,000 customers.[9] In March 2020, E.ON and its subsidiary Npower licensed Kraken to manage their combined 10 million customers.[10] By May 2021, E.ON completed the migration of two million former Npower customers to the Kraken-powered E.ON Next platform.[11] The migration was hailed as being responsible for E.ON's financial recovery in the UK.[12][13][14] The Kraken software was also licensed to Australia's Origin Energy as part of their May 2020 agreement.[15]

In June 2021, the smart grid energy software company Upside Energy was rebranded as KrakenFlex following its acquisition by Octopus in November 2020.[16] KrakenFlex manages Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as electric vehicles and home solar systems.[17][16][18]

By November 2021, Kraken secured a deal with EDF Energy to move its five million customers to the Kraken platform, starting in 2023, which increased the number of energy accounts managed by Kraken to over 20 million globally.[19][20] Kraken also has strategic partnerships with Hanwha Group, EDF and Tokyo Gas.[21][22][23]

In 2022, Kraken expanded to include the water and broadband/telecom sectors.[24][25][26][27] By 2024, Kraken managed 54 million customer accounts globally[28] and secured its first deal with a North American utility, Saint John Energy, for its demand flexibility and customer platform.[29][30][31]

Financials

edit

In the fiscal year 2022, Kraken Technologies reported revenue of £115.3 million, with 16.1 million accounts on its platform.[32] In 2023, Octopus Energy announced an additional investment in Kraken Technologies, which was valued at £6.2 billion ($7.8 billion).[11][33]

Awards

edit

Kraken has received several industry awards, including:

  • Shortlisted for the Flex Award at the Decentralised Energy Awards 2024 for Kraken SmartFlex.[34]
  • Winner of the Grid Edge Award at the 25th Annual Platts Global Energy Awards.[35]
  • Awarded Best Use of Energy Flexibility Data and Flexibility Service Provider of the Year at the 2024 Flex Awards.[36]
  • Received the Technology Whitespace Award at the Global Energy Transition Awards 2024.[37]
