Kurt was born in 1971 in Dallas, Texas to Jerome (Jerry) and Jean Phillips. In 1980, Kurt along with his parents, two sisters and brother relocated to Ulysses, Kansas.

After graduating from Ulysses High School he attended Wichita State University where he studied music, focusing on jazz guitar with instructor Craig Owens.

In 1992 he moved transferred to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. There he immersed himself in the music scene, gigging in coffee shops, bars, and clubs in Lawrence and the Kansas City area.

On a whim, he moved to Colorado, spending the winter working at Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort before relocating at the age of 24 to Chicago, Illinois.

In Chicago, Kurt spent his time working in the bar/restaurant scene while honing his craft as a jazz guitarist. It was at this time he took up classical guitar and enrolled in The Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University, studying with guitarist, Paul Henry.

Prior to graduating, Kurt moved to Austin, Texas and opened Lone Star School of Music with his wife. He spent the next ninne years teaching, recording, and performing with his Latin jazz trio, TRES.

After selling the school and it's two locations, Kurt took up writing as a means of expression as his musical career was hindered by a repetitive motion injury.

The Hand of the Archer was released through Duende Publishing in May of 2023, followed by his followup novella, Noise Ordinance in April of 2024.[2]
