Comment: It was featured in the 2023 edition of the Smithsonian Magazine which discussed robotic carving of marble sculptures: Does "featured" here just mean "mentioned"? If no, it means "described and discussed in depth", then a start would be (i) to specify the author(s), title, and page numbers, and (ii) to summarize what the article says. Lady Kindness is a 29.3 ft marble sculpture located in Cortland, Ohio. It is the largest ever robotically carved marble sculpture.[1], and also the tallest freestanding marble sculpture in America.[2]. Constructed entirely of white carrara marble, the sculpture was unveiled in 2024 by Dale Johnson and Laura Bush in Cortland, Ohio at the Cadobaz Estate of Dr. Farid Naffah. Lady Kindness is designed in Hellenistic grandeur, its floral detail fashioned in art-deco style. With its Corinthian pedestal, it stands tall at 29.3 feet[3] weighing 80 tons. It was featured in the 2023 edition of the Smithsonian Magazine which discussed robotic carving of marble sculptures [4].
Conception
editThe sculpture was commissioned by the Avamar Foundation, a local foundation in Bazetta Township which is committed to helping the needy elderly population in the community obtain access to medications by providing temporary financial assistance through the generous donations of its benefactors. It was digitally carved from 200 tons of Carrara marble in Italy by Garfagnana Innovazione. The sculpture was unveiled to the public on the 17th August 2024 to a symphony orchestra performance of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini.[5]
The sculpture was inspired by events in the life of Dr. Farid Naffah, a Warren based gastroenterologist who immigrated to the United States from war-ravaged Lebanon in 1976. “I conceived and designed Lady Kindness during a time of strife and division in our country and the world,” said Naffah. “She offers a rose, a symbol of love, to all, especially the neglected, the abandoned, and the forgotten. Lady Kindness is the most important art project of my life to date. Her figure represents the culmination of my life’s work to embody kindness, a lesson introduced to me by my grandmother and then instilled in me by my mother.”
