Lauren A. Colby, Jr. (b. 1931, Maryland - d. 2012, Frederick, MD) was an attorney who received his Undergraduate Degree from SUNY at Harpur College in 1953 and his JD in 1955. Working for the United States government on behalf of the FCC, Colby later in his career composed a tract entitled "In Defense of Smokers", and his dispute of the government's "anti-tobacco crusade" was a claim that 60% of lung cancer patients not being regular tobacco users. "In Defense" At the same time, Colby opined, a number of smokers never got lung cancer was a proof that the claim that if smoking were eliminated, so would lung cancer likewise be eliminated. ("In Defense," chapter 4) His obituary also mentioned that his unconventional view of tobacco was one of his favorite subjects of debate. While appearing on a French television broadcast, he even pointed out that while smoking has a negative effect on life expectancy, this could in turn be considered a benefit since it would relieve the overall burden of nursing home care and end-of-life costs, since smokers therefore died at a younger age on average.
