Leland Barry Hirsch (December 10, 1946 – October 28, 2025) was an American hair colorist, beauty-industry businessman and art collector. He co-founded ARTec Systems Group, a professional hair care company that Women's Wear Daily credited with developing the first color-depositing shampoo, and which was acquired by L'Oréal in 2002. He later founded the hair color brands Celeb Luxury and No Fade Fresh. His collection of twentieth-century photography was sold at Sotheby's in 2018.
Early life and early career
[edit]Hirsch was born on December 10, 1946.[1] In published interviews he described coming from a family of chemists and working on hair color chemistry in a laboratory as a teenager, and said he had worked as a new product development consultant for Redken, Clairol and other manufacturers over a period of some forty years.[2][3]
In 1972, Hirsch and his business partner Michael Mazzei opened The Color Salon at NuBest & Co. in Manhasset, New York, in which hair color operated as a department separate from the main salon.[3][4]
ARTec Systems Group
[edit]Hirsch co-founded ARTec Systems Group with Mazzei; the company was headquartered on Long Island, New York.[5][note 1] ARTec developed and marketed hair care and hair color products sold through authorized distributors to professional salons, with brands including ARTec Color Depositing System, Textureline, Purehair, Kiwi and Enamels.[5] According to Women's Wear Daily, ARTec was the first company to develop a color-depositing shampoo, establishing a hair color maintenance category for the salon industry, and the company restricted distribution to salons rather than mass-market channels.[6] Hirsch was the company's president, chief executive and creative director.[6][7]
In August 2002, L'Oréal announced the acquisition of ARTec Systems Group through its subsidiary L'Oréal USA; terms were not disclosed.[8][5] L'Oréal stated that the acquisition was intended principally to develop the L'Oréal Professionnel brand in the United States.[6][5] ARTec employed about 85 people at the time, and its Port Washington office was consolidated into L'Oréal Professionnel in Manhattan. Hirsch and Mazzei resigned their positions and remained with the company as contract consultants.[6]
Later companies
[edit]Hirsch founded Celeb Luxury, a Florida-based professional hair care company, in 2016, following a period away from the industry.[9] Its products applied color-depositing technology to shampoos and conditioners sold through professional salon distributors.[9][10]
In February 2020 he launched No Fade Fresh, which applied the same category of product to the mass retail market through drug and grocery chains.[11] In 2022 the brand reported increased sales at mass retailers and stated plans to expand into Canada and Mexico.[11] Hirsch was named an honoree of the South Florida Business & Wealth Apogee Awards in 2020.[12]
Photography collection
[edit]Hirsch assembled a collection of twentieth- and twenty-first-century photography over approximately two decades.[13] It included works by Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Peter Beard, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Chuck Close, Lillian Bassman and Herb Ritts.[13][14] The collection contained four of the ten images Arbus selected for A Box of Ten Photographs (1970), her only portfolio.[15]
On April 10, 2018, Sotheby's New York sold the collection in a single-owner auction of 51 lots, A Beautiful Life: Photographs from the Collection of Leland Hirsch.[14] The sale totaled more than $2 million, with a buy-in rate of approximately 15 percent, and proceeds fell within the aggregate pre-sale estimate range.[16] Avedon's Dovima with Elephants was the top lot at $375,500; Ritts's group portrait of five models sold for $150,000; Arbus's Child with a Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park sold for $137,500; and Steven Meisel's Madonna Hitching, from Sex, sold for $16,250.[13][16]
Personal life and death
[edit]Hirsch lived in South Florida.[12] He died on October 28, 2025, at the age of 78.[1]
