Career

edit

Medical Practice

edit

Dr. Akduman is a board-certified ophthalmologist with over 30 years of experience. His professional interests include advanced cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation, corneal transplantation, diabetic retinopathy, Usher syndrome, uveitis, vitrectomy, and diseases and treatments of the vitreous and retina.[5] He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Board of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, the American Uveitis Society, and the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.[3]

Entrepreneurial Ventures

edit

Dr. Akduman is the CEO of LA Eye, a company developing ophthalmic implants. His notable invention, the Staphyloma Supporting Device, is designed to address pathologic myopia by reshaping the posterior sclera to a more natural form and reducing axial length to treat or prevent blinding myopic maculopathy.[6]

In 2022, Dr. Akduman won the Winning Pitch Challenge in the Retina category for his invention, the Staphyloma Supporting Device, which was subsequently patented.[2] The implant has been successfully applied to patients in Turkey, demonstrating its potential in treating severe vision problems related to high myopia.[7]

Dr. Akduman is actively seeking FDA approval for his implant to facilitate its commercial production and global availability.[7]

Inventions and Patents

edit

Dr. Akduman holds a patent for the Staphyloma Supporting Device, assigned to LA Eye. This device is a surgical implant designed to improve, support, or help preserve vision by altering the axial length or curvature of the eye.[8]

The Staphyloma Supporting Device is constructed as a unitary implant from a single base material, such as titanium alloy, ensuring structural rigidity and longevity. The device features a macular indenter plate that is wider than the implant body, and an anchor structure that is wider than the macular indenter plate. This design allows for a compound concavity scleral contact surface, which closely approximates the outer surface of the eye. The anterior radius of curvature works in tandem with a posterior radius of curvature that is smaller, enabling the restoration of macular shape and axial length.[9]

The design of the implant allows for better integration with the scleral surface, enhancing the stability and effectiveness of the surgical procedure. By restoring the natural curvature and reducing the axial length, the device aims to correct severe myopia and prevent associated retinal pathologies.[9]

Awards and honors

edit

In 2022, Dr. Akduman was awarded first place in the 'Retina' category at the Winning Pitch Challenge for his invention, the Staphyloma Supporting Device.[2]

Personal life

edit

Dr. Akduman resides in the United States and maintains strong ties with the Turkish medical community.[1] His work has significantly impacted patients suffering from severe myopia, offering new hope through advanced surgical interventions.[7]
