Lila de Chaves is an ethnologist of international acclaim and a writer.
Early life
editShe acquired French and musical education due to her mother. She finished highschool at Moraitis private school and then moved to Switzerland, where she studied Social and Political Sciences at the University of Geneva. She specialized in comparative ethnology and particularly in historic textiles, jewellery and costumes.
Career
editIn 1977 she started collaborating with the Benaki Museum as a specialist in historic textiles. She became a curator at the jewellery collection and responsible for the collection of Coptic textiles. She initiated a seminar for hand-made jewellery and miniature sculpture in silver and gold, which she taught for 23 years. She also taught seminars on art history and industrial textiles for cultural foundations. She taught at the Master of Arts fo Southeastern American College and history of textiles and jewellery as a visiting lecturer at the Ethnography Department of the School of Philosophy at Athens University, at the Amercan College of Greece, the Women's International Club (WIC) and foreign universities, such as Stanf[1]ord, Einchamps Ain Shams in Cairo, the University of Salento in Lecce and the University of St. John in Malta. She has lectured in major museums all over the world, such as the National Museum of Moscow, the National Museum of Kyoto in Japan, the National Singapore Museum and that of Baku in Azerbaidjan, the National Museum of Oslo in Norway, in Dubrovnik, Lyon, Tarentum, Addis Abeba, San Diego, Buenos Ayres, Budapest, Luxemburg and Hanoi.

- Member of the board of the Association of Friends of the Archaeological Museum of Patras.
- Vice-president of the British entity EMF (Council of Europe) which offers awards every year to important museums of Europe.

Heritage and Museums
editLila de Chaves founded the not-for-profit organization «Heritage & Museums»[4] in order to enhance the world cultural heritage through communication, education and research and with a special focus on less favoured segments of the population, culturally. In this respect, the organization donates money or travelling expenses through prizes for contests. Heritage & Museums has already organized many cutural events, bridging cultural heritage with current cultural creation. Notable among these events are the following:
- "Νew Technologies and the Future of Museums", a conference in the War Museum of Athens. The proceedings were published under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.
- Memories of Byzantium: a concert with works by Mikis Theodorakis at the Odeion of Herod Atticus.
- Presentation of the "Journal of Rare Photographs" by the Campio School of Phthiotis at the Benaki Museum. The school had been founded through financial support of the American College of Greece.
- International Conference of Byzantine Studies
- Presentation of the monuments and archives of the H.M. of Sta Aikaterini in Sinai.
- Presentation of the work of the Nobel-awarded poet Gabrielle Mistral from Chile at the Benaki Museum.
- Charity concert at the Megaron.
- Concert of Esthonian and Greek artists at the Benaki Museum under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Esthonia, under the circumstance of the International Day of Music.
- Concert by Camerata with a Turkish soloist under the auspices of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism at the Benaki Museum.
- Three exhibitions of goldsmithing at the Benetatos Mansion in Palaio Psychiko.
- Painting contest for primary and secondary schools.
