Luffy is the central protagonist of the series. Inspired by the pirate Shanks, he set out to sea to become a pirate and form a crew to find the One Piece and become the next King of the Pirates. Luffy has the abilities of the Gum-Gum Fruit, which gives him the ability to stretch parts of his body. After meeting a boy named Koby, and traveling together to Shells Town, Luffy met the swordsman Roronoa Zoro and the thief Nami, with whom he stole the safe containing a map of the Grand Line from the Marine base, and while they accompanied Luffy on his journey, he said goodbye to Koby.[3] Continuing his journey, Luffy recruited the sniper Usopp into his crew and obtained the ship that he named as Going Merry.[5] Later he also recruited the cook Sanji, and they set off to find Nami after she left with the Arlong Pirates.[6] After defeating Arlong, Luffy had a confrontation with his grandfather, Marine Vice Admiral Garp, who tried to convince him to give up piracy, but Luffy refused since it was his dream. Garp let him go, but for his actions, Luffy earned his first pirate bounty of 30,000,000. Later, the crew swore by their dreams, with Luffy vowing to be King of the Pirates.[7]
Nami | Emily Rudd[1]; Lily Fisher (young)[8][7] | 1–2 | — |

Usopp | Jacob Romero Gibson[1]; Kevin Saula (young)[10] | 1–2 | — |
A skilled sniper, using a slingshot, famous in his village for his lies, because since he was a child he cried out every morning that the pirates were coming. The reason for this was that he wanted his sick mother to recover thinking that his father, the pirate Yasopp, would return. But because of this, no one in the village believed him when his friend Kaya was going to be attacked by pirates.[10] Thanks to Luffy, Zoro and Nami, they were able to save Kaya, and then Usopp joined them to become a pirate, saying goodbye to Kaya with a kiss.[5][11] After continuing to navigate and facing several problems, the Straw Hat Pirates continued their journey, and they swore by their dreams, with Usopp vowing to become a brave warrior of the sea.[7]

After Luffy asked him to join him, Sanjia agreed as he dreamed of finding the sea known as All Blue, which was a paradise for a cook. Before leaving, he said goodbye to Zeff, thanking him for everything he did for him.[9] He fights using his legs to kick his opponents. As he escaped, he contacted Dracule Mihawk to hunt down Luffy.[9] Continuing his journey, Garp arrived at the Baratie, where he took the opportunity to eat, while chatting with Zeff, the chef and a former pirate, who upon learning that he was going after Luffy, told him that now was the time of his generation.[8] In Coco Village, Garp fought Luffy to stop being a pirate, but his grandson refused, and remembering Roger and what Zeff told him, Garp let him go.[7]
Buggy | Jeff Ward[14] | 1 | 2 |
Captain of the Buggy Pirates, notable for his enormous red clown-like nose, and with a bounty of 15,000,000. He ruled a town where he forced the villagers to watch his circus show.[11] He possesses the power of the Chop-Chop Fruit, which allows him to separate his body parts. Buggy confronted Luffy to get the map of the Grand Line from him, recognizing in progress his straw hat as Shanks's, commenting that they were partners in the past.[4] After being defeated by Luffy, he had an encounter with Arlong, who forced Buggy to help him find Luffy because he also wanted the map.[10] While the Arlong Pirates were carrying Buggy's head with them, they found Luffy at the Baratie Restaurant thanks to Buggy hiding one of his ears in Luffy's hat.[6] After the Arlong Pirates left with the map, Luffy and his companions took Buggy's head with them to find their whereabouts.[8] When Zoro and Sanji confronted the Arlong Pirates, Buggy promised to help them if he could get his body back, but after he became whole again, he mocked them and ran away. He later found Luffy's first wanted poster in a bar, and swore revenge on him, which made Alvida, also in the same bar, support that proposal.[7]
Koby | Morgan Davies[14] | 1 | — |
A boy who worked as a chore boy for the pirate Alvida, although he dreamed of becoming a Marine. After Luffy helped him escape from Alvida's tyranny, he enlisted in the Marines at the base of Shells Town, where he said goodbye to Luffy.[3] After becoming a cadet, he became a subordinate of Vice Admiral Garp, sailing on his ship.[4] Traveling, he began to see through Garp and Helmeppo's explanations that the World Government, for which the Marines worked, had its dark side.[9] Over time, he and Helmeppo also began to become closer.[6] After finding Luffy in Coco Village, Koby gave him the poster with his first reward, then said goodbye to him again, and upon returning with Garp he told him that he wanted to strive to be a good Marine.[7]
