This list of nations formerly ruled by the United States includes states, or parts of states, that were formerly under rule of the United States government. It does not include minor outlying islands claimed by the U.S. or current U.S. territories.

Cuba December 10, 1898 May 20, 1902 After the War of 1898, Spain relinquished sovereignty over Cuba to the United States. The U.S. military occupied Cuba until they allowed a Cuban government to regain control over the island. Under the Platt Amendment, the U.S. retained the right to intervene until it was repealed in 1934.
Philippines 12 June 1898 4 July 1946 The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony in the 16th century. After the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded the islands to the U.S. in the Treaty of Paris. The U.S. paid Spain $20 million USD for the archipelago. In 1942, the islands fell under Japanese control. The Philippines gained their independence after World War II.
