IMDb is not a reliable source (note: bare URLs should be avoided). Sources should substantiate the claims and should name Corradine. Luke Corradine is an Italian-born composer and record producer. He has written music for films and TV programmes as well as new scores for concert performances of classic silent movies.

Early life and career

edit

Corradine, was born in Trieste, Italy..[1]. He studied composition with jazz composer Pedro Iturralde and pianist Horacio Icasto,[2] and later with guitarist Steve Freund in Chicago.[citation needed]

His early work under the 'Phat Gecko' moniker, was championed by British label Deviant Records[3] and featured in numerous international compilations[4] such as Warner BrothersNow Dance 2004 alongside Justin Timberlake and Kylie Minogue amongst others, and Sonar Kollektiv's chill-out ‘Secret Love’ series.[5][6]

Three singles originated from this period appearing in over thirty compilations worldwide.[7]

Film scores

edit

In collaboration with Nigerian film director Obi Emelonye, Corradine received an Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Award for the film Last Flight to Abuja [8] and later, in 2012, an African Movie Academy Award for his music work in the film Onye Ozi, the first film in Igbo language to receive international recognition [9].

From 2014 Corradine scored several independent films in the UK and USA, notably Hard Time Bus (winner Best Film - Hollywood Black Film Festival) [10];British thrillers Welcome To Curiosity (featuring Richard Blackwood) [11]; Two Days in the Smoke (featuring Alan Ford) [12]. Then in 2016, Corradine wrote the score for Polish-American film No Panic With a Hint of Hysteria (Stephen Baldwin, Zbigniew Zamachowski) [13], a fast paced black comedy described by some critics as Baldwin's best performance to date. The score is a tribute to swing jazz and blues music of the 1930s and 1940s.

Television

edit

For television, Corradine has composed music for Lego; The Samaritans[14], The European Fine Art Fair and Amnesty International [15] For director Simon Dinsell, Corradine has contributed for three consecutive years music to Stand Up to Cancer,[16] a British fund-raising series featuring Keira Knightley, Ronan Keating[17] and Stephen Mangan.[18]

In 2017 Corradine composed the music for the opening of YiHaus, the world's largest commercial shopping village in Shanghai, China, by Value Retail[19]. This was followed, in 2022, by the creation of the sound design for the multi-awarded documentary The Beatles and India[20] [21]for director Ajoy Bose.

Silent film scoring

edit

As a direct result of Corradine's experience in Ukraine, The Spanish Film Institute (Filmoteca Española), commissioned from him a new score for the silent film The Night Coachman (Georgi Tasin, 1929) premiered in Madrid in October of 2022, at the Cine Doré[22] as the opening event for the festival Semana del Cine Ucraniano[23]. Later that year, the Fine Arts Circle of Madrid, placed an order for a new electronic score for the Soviet film Man with a Movie Camera, performed live by Corradine, and premiered at the Cine Studio [24]. This was followed by a commission from the The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures for a new orchestral score for the classic film Earth (Alexander Dovzhenko, 1930) [25]. The score was premiered at the Ted Mann Theatre of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Los Angeles, in July 2023 [26], under the direction and supervision of the composer, to positive reviews [27][28][29]. The score later premiered in Canada, as part of the Toronto Film Festival program celebrating the Ukrainian day of independence [30], and in Spain as part of the MusicaV Festival in Vigo, and conducted by the composer[31] [32]

Corradine's interest in romantic piano music and in Ukrainian history culminated in the composition of a third score for silent film Bread at IMDb (Shpykovskyi, 1930), a movie considered lost after many decades of Soviet censorship, and commissioned by the Festival Internacional Alborada Clásica[33][34]. While receiving nationwide radio coverage [35], the score premiered live in Granada, Spain, in February 2024 and was performed by Australian pianist Duncan Gifford [36]
