Madhurendra Kumar is an Indian sand artist from Bihar. He is known for creating sand sculptures and miniature artworks on natural materials, including leaves. His work has been reported by Indian news organisations in connection with art festivals, cultural events and public-awareness projects.
Early life
[edit]Madhurendra Kumar is from East Champaran district in Bihar. A 2020 profile in The Times of India identified him as a resident of Bijabani South village in East Champaran and reported that he developed his sand-art skills on the banks of the Arun River, a tributary of the Bagmati. The report also mentioned his participation in the Buddha Mahotsav in Bodh Gaya and Rajgir, the Sonepur Mela and an art festival in Nepal.[1]
Career
[edit]Kumar works primarily with sand, creating large-scale sculptures for public events and cultural occasions. His subjects have included historical and cultural figures, religious themes, environmental issues and public-awareness messages.
In November 2019, The Times of India reported on a sand artwork of mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh created by Kumar in Patna.[2]
In January 2023, Punjab Kesari reported that Kumar created a sand sculpture depicting Munger Fort that was about 20 feet high as part of a New Year presentation in Munger.[3]
In February 2025, ABP News reported that Kumar created a 20-foot-high sand sculpture in Bhagalpur for the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the report, approximately 50 tonnes of sand were used and the work took about 12 hours to complete.[4]
Leaf art
[edit]In addition to sand sculpture, Kumar creates miniature artworks on leaves. In August 2024, Navbharat Times reported that he created a portrait of Narendra Modi on a peepal leaf in connection with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.[5]
In August 2024, Hindustan reported that Kumar created a leaf artwork depicting Madhubani artist and Padma Shri awardee Godavari Dutt following her death.[6]
Recognition
[edit]Kumar has received media coverage for his participation in sand-art festivals and for his public artworks. In 2025, several Indian news reports covered his recognition by the London Book of World Records.
Hindustan reported in August 2025 that Kumar's name was entered in the London Book of World Records and that he was honoured at a ceremony held at the British Parliament in London.[7]
OneIndia separately reported on the same recognition and stated that the record entry concerned more than 5,000 artworks associated with social-awareness themes.[8]
Public and cultural themes
[edit]Kumar's reported artworks have addressed cultural heritage, public awareness, environmental concerns and social messages. His participation in regional and international sand-art events has also been covered by Indian media.[9]
