Madrasati is an online education system developed by the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia during the Coronavirus pandemic with the objective of facilitating learning for students enrolled in kindergarten, primary, middle school, and high school.[1][2][3]
Following the conclusion of the pandemic, the Madrasati platform continued to provide its diverse range of services to both learners and educators.[4]
Background
editIn light of the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic and in response to the measures taken by Saudi Arabia to address the pandemic, the Ministry of Education has announced the temporary suspension of studies in all regions and governorates of the Kingdom. This suspension will be effective from Monday, 14 Rajab 1441 AH (March 9, 2020 AD) until further notice. The decision pertains to all educational institutions, including public, private, and university schools, as well as the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation.[5] It also mandates the implementation of remote learning for all educational levels.
On April 16, the Ministry of Education announced a decision to transition all public education students to the subsequent grade level following their current grade, with the objective of maintaining the learning process.
On August 15, Minister of Education Dr. Hamad Al-Sheikh announced the resumption of studies for the new academic year with the distance education system for all stages of public education for the first seven weeks of the year. He stated that the situation would be assessed later to consider the remaining weeks of study in the first semester. He further specified that theoretical courses at universities and the Technical Training Corporation would be conducted remotely, while practical courses would be held in person.[6] On October 8, following an assessment of the situation, it was resolved to continue education for the first semester remotely for all educational levels.[7]
How to use
editAccess to the Madrasati platform is achieved by linking a Microsoft account with the Tawakkalna account, which was created by the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence. Learners, regardless of gender, are required to log into the Madrasati platform using the email address provided to them and enter their password. Upon successful authentication, they are redirected to a page that enables them to access virtual classrooms, complete assignments and examinations, and pose queries to their instructors. The integration of Microsoft Teams, a platform developed by Microsoft, facilitates entry into virtual classrooms.
Benefits
editIn the context of the ongoing global pandemic and the spread of viruses and diseases, the internet has emerged as a key solution to the disruptions to daily life and essential activities. This is accomplished through the development of educational websites and platforms that guarantee the continuity of the learning process by enabling students to pursue their studies remotely, without the necessity of attending public gatherings. Among these platforms is "Madrasati," an education-focused platform[8] that reduces the risk of virus transmission and organizes structured schedules. For instance, middle and high school students have classes from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., while primary school students have classes from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The platform has played a pivotal role in sustaining the educational journey, as corroborated by experts in the field of education and parents alike. It has benefited over six million students across more than 250,000 daily virtual classrooms. Furthermore, 525,000 teachers, parents, school leaders, and educational supervisors have also utilized the platform, enabling them to engage in a multifaceted educational system comprising diverse pathways and responsibilities.[9]
Deployment
editThe Madrasati educational platform was the most frequently searched term on Google in Saudi Arabia.[10] It began to yield results after the seventh week of distance learning and the familiarization of parents with the platform and the alternative channels employed by the Ministry of Education.[11]
E-Learning Consortium Organization
editIn 2021, the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), in collaboration with several global organizations, published the second international developmental study on e-learning in Saudi Arabia during the ongoing global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The study involved 453,879 individuals, including students, educators, parents, and academic staff. Of these, 387,000 were from K-12 education, while over 65,000 were from higher education institutions.
The study conducted a comparative analysis of the "Madrasati" platform with the top seven global platforms across 174 countries, thereby underscoring its noteworthy superiority as a leading international model and one of the most advanced e-learning solutions during the ongoing pandemic. Madrasati has a user base of over 6 million, with a 98% participation rate, which makes it a prominent example in the global context, particularly in comparison to other countries' efforts to implement national learning management systems for public education.[12]
In its assessment, UNESCO identified Saudi Arabia as one of the four leading global models in e-learning, alongside South Korea, China, and Finland. Furthermore, UNESCO adopted the evaluative framework developed by the National Center for e-learning, which was based on the international study of best practices in e-learning. This study represents the culmination of a successful national journey towards e-learning transformation on the global stage, thereby positioning Saudi Arabia as a prominent leader among the world's foremost nations in this field, as evidenced by extensive research and studies.[13]
