The Majeed Fidayeen Brigade is a suicide squad associated with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).[1]
The Majeed Brigade was established in 2011 and has carried out several suicide attacks targeting Pakistani security forces and Chinese nationals involved in China–Pakistan Economic Corridor projects in Pakistan.[2]
History
editThe Majeed Brigade was named after the two brothers, Majeed Langove Senior and Majeed Langove Junior. In August 1974, Majeed Senior lost his life when he attempted to assassinate then-Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto during his visit to Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan.[1][3]
Two years after the death of Majeed Langove Senior, Majeed Langove Junior was born.[1] Majeed Junior was killed while trying to protect his comrades during a raid by Pakistani security forces on their hideout in Quetta in March 2010.[3] The death of Majeed Langove Junior was widely mourned by nationalists throughout Balochistan.[1]
Following the death of Majeed Langove Junior, Aslam Baloch, alias Achu, the leader of the BLA at that time, established a death squad and named it as the Majeed Brigade. The Brigade conducted its first suicide attack in December 2011 to target Shafiq Mengal, a tribal leader and ally of the Pakistan Army. Although Shafiq Mengal survived the attack, at least 14 people were killed.[1]
The squad then experienced a period of inactivity due to financial constraints and a shortage of recruits. It took seven years before the Majeed Brigade launched its second suicide attack in August 2018[3] when they targeted a bus carrying Chinese engineers in Dalbandin.[1]
Aslam Baloch led the Majeed Brigade until his death in Kandahar, Afghanistan during a suicide attack in December 2018. Throughout his tenure, he remained committed to executing suicide attacks against Chinese interests and the Pakistani government.[4]
In 2024, the Government of Pakistan officially proscribed the Majeed Brigade, designating it as a banned organization.[5]
Notable attacks
edit- In November 2018, three members of the Majeed Brigade attacked the Chinese consulate in Karachi.[3] The attack led to the deaths of at least two policemen and all three attackers involved in the operation.[6]
- In June 2020, four heavily armed members of the Majeed Brigade launched an assault on the Pakistan Stock Exchange building in Karachi.[3] The attack resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, including all four attackers.[7]
- In May 2019, three members of the Majeed Brigade stormed the Pearl-Continental Hotels & Resorts in Gwadar and executed an attack reminiscent of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.[8] The attack resulted in the deaths of at least four hotel employees and a Pakistan Navy soldier.[9]
