Malambo Ska Band is a British-style ska and reggae band formed in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2016. It's one of the first bands in the Argentina ska movement to sing in both English and Spanish language, a homage to the british ska 2Tone Records sounds. Also, it's one of the first bands in Argentina to be part of the Specialized Records annual ska compilations in the UK.
The name of the band references the Argentine folk musical style and dance called Malambo.
History
editThe band quickly established itself in the Buenos Aires ska scene, performing at prominent venues like Makena, Niceto Club, The Roxy, El Emergente, and Salón Pueyrredón.
In 2018, they released their debut EP, "Under the Ska," on the independent label Argie Pop Records,[1][2] produced, mixed and mastered by Esteban Descalzo from Kingston Records. Subsequent releases include the single "Racist Friend" (2020) featuring trumpet virtuoso Hugo Lobo (from Dancing Mood) on horns, a covers album titled "Listen Up!" (2021), and the single "La Cuenta" (2021)[3][4] (produced, mixed and mastered by Goy Karamelo from Karamelo Santo). In 2023, they released a series of singles:
- "Otra Realidad" (produced, mixed and mastered by Goy Karamelo from Karamelo Santo
- "War" (cover of a Bob Marley song)
- "Quizás, Quizás (Perhaps)" (cover of a classic bolero in rocksteady ska rhythms)
- "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" (cover of a Ramones song)[5]
Malambo Ska Band continue to be active in the Argentine ska scene.
Musical Style
editMalambo Ska Band draws inspiration from the classic British ska sound, characterized by its skanking rhythms, horn sections, and catchy melodies. Their music often incorporates social commentary and a sense of fun. Their original songs are usually sung in English, although they also started to release songs sung in Spanish as well. Their music has been compared to UK ska bands such as The Selecter and The Bodysnatchers.
