Marion High School was a public secondary school located in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
History
editFormal education for white students in the rural portions of Calcasieu Parish northeast of Lake Charles began in 1908 with the construction of the one-room English Bayou School. From this beginning, the school expanded until, in 1941, a modern brick building was constructed on the site of the old one-room schoolhouse and, owing to its proximity to "Marion," the first official seat of Calcasieu Parish, the new school was called Marion High School. The first graduating class at Marion, in 1942, consisted of eight students (five girls and three boys).
By 1950 however, continued growth at Marion necessitated another new building and the school's curriculum was expanded to include commercial courses, a library, a shop, and a band. Additionally, a gymnasium and lighted football stadium allowed the school to conduct physical education courses.
In 1957 the school, squeezed by continuous growth, required another facilities upgrade. This time, however, the Calcasieu Parish School Board and Marion officials realized that the school's current site could not longer sustain a modern high school. That year, a new modern-brick building was constructed on Pineview Street, roughly one mile east of the old Marion campus. There, the home economics and commercial departments were expanded and a foreign languages department was added.
