Math Input Panel is a default application included within Microsoft Windows operating systems and is used to turn mathematical drawings into text that can be copy and pasted into compatible Microsoft applications, such as Office 365.[1]
Overview
editThe tool is used by entering "math" into the search bar, by pressing Win+R than typing "mip.exe" into the "run" prompt, by going to the start menu and going to the folder "Windows Accessories" and clicking "Math Input Panel", by going into "My PC" then opening "Local Disk (C:)/Program Files/Common Files/microsoft shared/ink" in the file explorer address bar, then double-clicking "mip", or going into Command Prompt than than typing "%commonprogramfiles%\microsoft shared\ink\mip.exe" (with quotations).[2]
Math Input Panel has several options, that being under the tabs of "History", "Options", Help", and "Input", along with a sidebar with the options "Write", "Erase", "Select and Correct", "Undo", "Redo", and "Clear".
The History tab is used to store the data of mathematical inputs. If one draws a mathematical equation, then pressed "Input", the data of that equation would be stored in the history tab.
The "Options" tab has five functions, such as:
- Clear Writing area after insertion: clears the writing area after the "Insert" button is pressed.
- Side buttons on left side of writing area: places the side buttons on the left side of the writing area instead of its original place at its right side.
- Side buttons on right side of writing area: returns the side buttons to their original place at the left side.
- Show on-screen keyboard buttons: shows two keyboard buttons "Del" and "Enter" to be pressed.
- Show grid: Shows a grid in the writing area
The "Help" tab has two functions, such as:
- Help Topics: redirects a person to a Microsoft Edge Microsoft support tab.
- About Math Input Panel: opens a window with the about information for Math Input Panel.
The "Input" button has one function, and that is to, when a mathematical equation is drawn and put into text form on the top preview bar, input a mathematical equation in an open Office 365 application.
The Side panel has 6 functions, such as:
- Write: the default function used in order to write mathematical equations.[1]
- Erase: used to erase drawn equations[1]
- Select and Correct: used to select a drawn equation and correct it via the dropdown menu of recommendations.[1]
- Undo: the function of undoing a draw[1]
- Redo: the function of redoing an undo[1]
- Clear: the function of clearing the drawing area[1]
Main Function
editThe main function for Math Input Panel is to have a mathematical equation drawn into the "Write math here" area, and have it put into text format.[1]
How one uses the Math Input Panel is by using either one's stylus or mouse and drawing an equation.[1] As one writes, one will see on the top preview bar text format of the drawn equation in real time.[1]
When one completes their equation, they will either open a Microsoft 365 app, and press "Input" to input it into the Office 365 application, or use the sidebar options to either correct it or erase something.
