Matthew John Gaspar Duran (/'duː-rɑːn'/; born January 23, 1988), also known by his nickname, Chuy, is an American engineer, philanthropist, and singer. In 2014, he founded the Rudi Foundation[1][2][3][4] a nonprofit organization that was founded to honor the great life of Kevin Alexander Rudi and to benefit cancer patients around the world. Through his work at the Rudi Foundation from 2014 to 2024, Matthew was able to establish a bedrock of professional leadership, management, fitness, and professional singing.
In 1992, Matthew was reading through his family's encyclopedia set, and he came upon the M volume. In there, he found Mechanical Engineering. He was immediately fascinated by the marriage of computers and physical machines that involve force and movement (among all of the engineering disciplines). In 2006, Duran enrolled at New Mexico State University with the goal of attaining his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
After his close fraternity brother, Kevin Rudi, passed away from an insidious cancer, Spindle Cell Sarcoma, there was the impetus to create the Rudi Foundation.[5] Through his leadership and management of the Rudi Foundation, Duran learned the routes of creating a business. In 2021, he established Durangineering.
Matthew grew up in a musical family, as well. Both of his parents were musicians during their high school tenures. Duran's father, John, played the trumpet and his mother, Lorraine, played the clarinet. From the very young age of 4, Duran and his sister, Valerie, were asked to sing for family functions. At the age of 8, Matthew discovered singing the National Anthem. He'd always seen the performer as someone to whom to aspire. That year, he performed the National Anthem for a high school basketball game in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He fell in love with performing in that moment. It wouldn't be until 2018, when he performed the National Anthem for a New Mexico United soccer game[6]versus Sacramento Republic FC that he had his true resurgence for performing. After this, he created Matt Duran Music,[6] a performance-based organization for large audiences. He also performed for the University of New Mexico's sporting events[6](men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, etc.) from 2016-2021.
Early life and Education
editMatthew John Gaspar Duran (Born Matthew John Duran) was born on January 23, 1988 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother, Lorraine, and father, John, are both from Las Vegas, New Mexico. His mother was an educator for over 30 years, and is retired. His father was a project manager and educator for over 30 years, as well, and is currently retired. Both parents graduated from West Las Vegas High School (WLV), and attained their Master of Education from New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU). Duran graduated from Robertson High School (RHS) in 2006 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Matthew has one sister, Valerie, whom also graduated from RHS, and is a teacher at West Las Vegas High School.
Duran heavily credits his parents' instillment of the importance of education to his graduate degrees and always continuing his educational journey. He graduated from New Mexico State University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and from the University of New Mexico in 2013 with a Dual Master of Engineering and Master of Business Administration.
Philanthropy
editEarly years
editAlthough attending college and graduate school focused in engineering, Duran always enjoyed the dynamics of leadership. When Matthew and his best friend, Kevin Rudi, were just 25, Rudi was diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcoma Cancer. Initially, Kevin was only given 6 months to survive. He eventually fought the insidious disease for 2 years, and succumbed to the cancer at the age of 27 on November 12, 2014. At this point, Matthew was implored to honor his best friend. After the initial name The Polar Bear Foundation was thrown out, the Rudi Foundation was born in honor of Duran's superhero, Kevin Rudi.
