Mayank Kejriwal is a computer scientist and Research Associate Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). He is also a principal scientist at the USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI).[1][2] His research focuses on knowledge graphs and their use in investigative search, including his work on Domain-specific Insight Graphs (DIG), an AI-powered search engine developed under DARPA's Memex program for human trafficking investigations.[3] His prize essay on DIG and its use in sex-trafficking investigations was published in Science in 2026.[4][5]

Early life and education

Kejriwal majored in computer engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 2012.[6] In 2016, he earned a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin.[6][1] His doctoral dissertation, Populating a Linked Data Entity Name System, received the 2017 Semantic Web Science Association Distinguished Dissertation Award.[7] He later completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the USC Marshall School of Business.[6][1]

Career

Kejriwal began his career in 2016 as a computer scientist at the USC Information Sciences Institute.[8] After joining ISI, he became involved in DARPA's Memex program and contributed to the development of DIG.[8][3]

In 2019, he was appointed as a research assistant professor in USC's Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.[8]

In 2022, he established the Artificial Intelligence and Complex Systems (AICS) group.[9] He leads the group in developing neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence systems that combine knowledge graphs with generative artificial intelligence models for complex real-world problems.[9][1]

He was later promoted to research associate professor.[1]

Research

Kejriwal's primary research focuses on knowledge graphs and their applications.[10] After joining USC ISI in 2016, he became involved in human trafficking investigations through DARPA's Memex program.[11] His collaboration with law enforcement drew his attention to the difficulty of tracing related information across large collections of web data, including online sex advertisements.[11]

Kejriwal contributed to the continued development of DIG with Pedro Szekely and Craig Knoblock.[12] His research with Szekely addressed information extraction from deliberately obscured webpages and entity-centric search over knowledge graphs, which allowed investigators to trace connections among advertisements through shared contact or location information.[13][14][12] Kejriwal's subsequent work incorporated feedback from investigative users into improvements to the system's extraction algorithms and search interface.[15]

By 2018, the IEEE Computer Society reported that DIG was being used by more than 200 law-enforcement agencies in the United States.[12] A 2022 systematic review published in PLOS ONE identified and classified 142 studies on the use of operations research and analytics to combat human trafficking, including several co-authored by Kejriwal.[16]

In 2026, Kejriwal published a paper on the development and deployment of DIG in the Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence.[17] A commentary in Science that year discussed the use of scalable artificial intelligence in sex-trafficking investigations.[18]

Other research

In a study of entities linked to the Panama Papers, Kejriwal and his co-author found that this offshore financial network was highly fragmented, with relatively few connections between its constituent institutions.[19] Fast Company magazine reported that this structure made it difficult to trace connections within the network.[20]

With Qile Wang, Hongyu Li, and Lu Wang, Kejriwal compared emoji use across 30 languages and 30 countries using tens of millions of tweets collected over one month.[21] The popularity of emoji followed a broadly consistent pattern across languages, although the range of emoji used varied by language and country.[21] Popular Science noted that emotion-related symbols dominated the most frequently used emoji.[22]

Working with Akarsh Nagaraj, Kejriwal used natural-language-processing methods to examine 2,443 copyright-expired English-language texts from Project Gutenberg.[23] About three-quarters of the character mentions identified in the sample were male.[23] Female characters accounted for a larger share of mentions in books by women than in books by men.[23]
