Biography
editMargaret Quirk is currently serving her third term as the Mayor of the Town of Georgina, Ontario. Her political career began in 1994 when she was elected as the Councillor for Ward 1 in the Keswick area, under her former last name, "Jordan." Quirk held this position successfully for five consecutive terms until 2010, when she decided not to run for re-election.
After a brief hiatus from municipal politics, Quirk returned in 2014 and was elected as Mayor of Georgina. She has since been re-elected twice, in October 2018 and October 2022.
Throughout her time on the Town Council, Mayor Quirk has actively participated in various committees. Notably, she has contributed to the Economic Development Committee, the Keswick Secondary Plan Committee, and the Equity and Diversity Committee. Additionally, Quirk has served on the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, a position in which she once held the role of Chair. At the regional level, through her role on Regional Council, she has been a Director of Housing York, Chair of the York Telecom Network (YTN), and Vice Chair of the Environmental Services Committee.
Quirk has resided in Georgina since 1985 and lives in the Sutton area with her husband. They have two stepchildren and two grandchildren. In her personal time, she enjoys gardening.
Early Political Career
editIn 1994, under her former last name, Jordan, Margaret Quirk was first elected to Town Council as the Councillor for Ward 1, representing the Keswick area. She held this role through five successive elections until she decided to step down in 2010.
Return to Politics
editIn 2014, Quirk re-entered the political scene, responding to public calls for her to run for mayor. She was elected as Mayor of Georgina on October 27, 2014, after receiving support from the community, family, and friends. She emphasized that her priority was to listen to the voices of all residents—newcomers, long-time residents, seasonal and full-time—and work together to shape the future of the town.
Re-Election as Mayor
editFollowing her successful term, Quirk was re-elected in 2018 and again in 2022. During these terms, she continued her commitment to community engagement and strategic planning for the development of Georgina.
Personal Life
editMargaret Quirk has lived in Georgina since 1985. She and her husband currently reside in the Sutton area. Outside of politics, Quirk is an enthusiastic gardener. She enjoys spending time with her stepchildren and grandchildren.
