Medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine"

The Commendation Badge of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine — Medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine" was part of the system of awards of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine that existed until 2012. The award was reinstated in 2015.

History of the Award

  • The Medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine" was established by the order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine dated May 20, 2003, No. 142.[1][2]. Due to non-compliance with formalities, the order was canceled at the request of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine[2]. The badge was re-established by the order of Minister of Defense Anatoliy Hrytsenko on December 12, 2005, No. 737.
  • Changes to the order No. 737 were made by the Minister of Defense's order dated November 1, 2010, No. 555[3].
  • On May 30, 2012, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych issued a decree approving new provisions for departmental commendations, requiring ministries and commanders of military formations to review and amend existing awards[4]. During 2012-2013, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine developed a new system of commendations[5], which did not include the Medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine".
  • From December 9, 2015, according to the order of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine No. 705 "On amendments to the order of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine No. 165 dated March 11, 2013", the medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine" was reintroduced[6].

Regulations on the Badge

  • The Commendation Badge of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine — Medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine" is awarded to servicemen of military formations established under Ukrainian law (excluding servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine), employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and other individuals for significant personal contributions to the development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • The award is conferred by order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine (by personal composition).
  • Nominations for the medal are made according to the current legislation of Ukraine.
  • The medal and its certificate are presented to the awardee.
  • In case of loss or damage, no duplicate is issued.
  • After the recipient's death, the medal and certificate remain with the family as a keepsake.

Description of the Badge

  • The Commendation Badge of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine — Medal "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine" is made of white metal and represents an eight-pointed radiant star. In the center is a straight-sided equilateral cross of yellow metal with flared ends, covered with purple enamel. In the center of the cross is a round medallion covered with blue enamel, featuring the Symbol of the Princely State of Volodymyr the Great (the small State Emblem of Ukraine). The cross is overlaid with two laurel branches made of yellow metal.
  • The reverse side of the medal is flat with the inscription "For Supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine" around the edge and an engraved number.
  • All images and text are embossed. The size of the medal is 38 mm.
  • The medal is attached by a ring to a rectangular clasp of white metal covered with ribbon. The clasp's dimensions: height — 42 mm, width — 28 mm. A pin for attaching the medal to clothing is on the back of the clasp.
  • The ribbon of the medal is made of yellow silk with a purple stripe in the center. The width of the ribbon is 28 mm, and the width of the purple stripe is 10 mm.
  • The medal bar is a metal plate covered with the corresponding ribbon. Dimensions: height — 12 mm, width — 28 mm.

Wearing the Badge

The medal is worn on the left side of the chest and, if the recipient has the Commendation Badge of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine — the Medal "For Personal Achievements", it is placed after it[7]
