Draft:Michael Schaeffer

Michael H. Schaeffer (died February 1893)[1] was chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Utah Territory from 1876 to 1879.

From Illinois.

On April 9, 1879, Schaeffer adjourned his court sine die and stepped down, due to news of the nomination of David T. Corbin to succeed him. Schaeffer's resignation was met with displeasure from some local officials, due to the office being left vacant and cases being left in limbo, despite uncertaintly about whether his nominated successor would be confirmed.[2]

Schaeffer was found dead in his home in Salem, Illinois, in February 1893, having apparently succumbed to heart disease.[1]
