Lady Mildred Marion Bowes-Lyon Jessup (October 6, 1868 – June 9, 1897) was a Scottish composer, creator of the opera Etelinda (1894).
Mildred Marion Bowes-Lyon was born on October 6, 1868 in Glamis Castle, one of eleven children of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Frances Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne.[1] She was the aunt of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.[2][3] She came from a musically inclined family and her mother toured her eleven children as a concert party for charity events.[1]
In 1890, she married wealthy American businessman Augustus Jessup.[1] While wealthy American women had long married titled British men, this marriage was thought to be the first example of the reverse.[2]
Mildred Marion Jessup died on 9 June 1897 in France.
