Rebecca Maria Stougaard Molina or simply Molina (born in 1992)..[1] is a Copenhagen based danish-chilean singer, composer, producer, mixer and drummer. She released her debut album When You Wake Up in 2024 and three EPs in 2017,2020 and 2021.

Musical Style

edit

Molina is often referred either as a dreamcore artist or a synth-pop/R&B[2] artist, although she describes herself as art-pop[3].

Career

edit

2012. Molina's debut song was Fall Right (song). It was added to the Kitsuné Maison Compilation 14: The 10th Anniversary Issue (Bonus Track Version)[4] compilation album. At that time, she used the alias Rebecca Molina and uploaded two videos to her now unused Youtube channel[5], whereby she posted the video clip for Fall Right (song).

2014. Molina made a cover of Time to Glow (song), by Lars and The Hands of Light. It was released under the Crunchy Frog Records.

2017. Molina finally changed her alias to only Molina. She released the EP Corpus and the single Salvation — both under the No3 label[6]. The EP possesses the songs: Dream Original, Are They Gold?, Vaporized, Hey Girl, Meat Monster and Salvation.

2018. Molina released the much acclaimed and popular single Hey Kids (feat. Late Verlane) which features the singer Late Verlane and the single inspired chiefly by 90's synth Mike under the Tambourhinoceros label.

2019. Molina released the sirenic single Venus and a single sang in spanish Parásito.

2020. Molina released her sophomore EP, Vanilla Shell — also under the Tambourhinoceros label[7]. The EP has the songs Vanilla Shell, Mike, Parásito, Hey Kids (feat. Late Verlane), Fastfood Widow and Venus. She also had been featured in two Jorge Elbretch's songs: The Entrance of Cold and Cryptic Moon.

2021. Molina published the single Cold, along an EP with the same name, Cold[8]. The EP has the songs Cold, Océano and El Aparecido (Víctor Jara interpretation), which is a cover of Víctor Jara's song El Aparecido.

2022-2023. Molina went on a hiatus[9]

2024. Molina released the singles Scorpio, Organs (feat. ML Buch) and Neverland along with a promotional only single called I Am Your House. She also released her debut album: "When You Wake Up[10]" — that consists of 10 songs: Navel, Scorpio, I Am Your House, The Road From Here, A New Day (feat. GB), Homesick, Flowers, Neverland, The Valleys of Tomé and Organs (feat. ML Buch), respectively under the Escho label. The album got a 7.6 score in Pitchfork[11]. In this year Molina has also been featured in an Astrid Sonne song: "Do You Wanna (Fine + Molina EDIT).

Personal Life

edit

Molina was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She attended Rhythmic Music Conservatory along with other singers such as Erika de Casier, ML Buch, Clarissa Connelly, Astrid Sonne and Fine. According to Molina, they would help themselves in things that one exceeded the other. Molina herself was good at Mixing and would often help her friends.

Molina had always loved art-pop, electronic and experimental music — and the artists who made did them, such as: Kate Bush, Björk, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Boards of Canada, Miharu Koshi, Basement Jaxx and more.

Molina revealed to The Fader that she wasn't happy with her songs, and she felt a disconnection towards them, hence the hiatus.

As of November 2024, Molina has a 1 year old daughter and a husband of unknown name.

In June 5th, 2018 Molina uploaded her sophomore single Hey Kids (feat. Late Verlane). To her surprise, the single turned out to be very famous and acclaimed by the whole internet. It would be featured in numerous forms of content, such as videos, short videos, posts, animations, edits and more, specially those featuring three certain types of "aesthetics": Dreamcore, Weirdcore and Traumacore. Like these aesthetics often convey, the song gives a dream-like experience to its listeners. The single, as of November 2024, currently has been used over 27k times in Youtube Shorts, has over 9 millions views on its official music video, and 100 millions plays on Spotify. The popularity of the song fortunately gave enough money to Molina in onder for her to support herself without a job and have funds to make her debut album.

During the period Molina was producing When You Wake Up, she was pregnant. To her, likewise to most women, this was a very special moment. That fact made her album be produced and filmed mostly at home. She also dedicated a lot of her songs to this moment, such as Navel. Molina's friends helped her make this album what it is, and it seems that she's proud of it.

Molina is an introvert, as she says. She doesn't like to post, be interviewed, or leave home so much, hence why there's not so much interviews or live concerts with her — although she has performed a few times live with ML Buch[12][13][14][15]

Musical Youth

edit

During her youth, Molina listened to a lot of mature songs, such as Wuthering Heights. Her mother would play "grow-up" songs and she would jam to it and to children's music at the same time. One of her biggest inspirations was Kate Bush. She wrote some songs while she was still a teen. She made her first song while she was only 20.
