Monroe Grisman is an American guitarist and producer. He is best known for performing in the bands The American Drag and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band Petty Theft,[1][2] and for producing the documentary film Village Music: Last of the Great Record Stores with his sister, Gillian Grisman.[3][4]
Early life
editGrisman was named for bluegrass music pioneer Bill Monroe, and lives in Fairfax, California. Grisman is the son of singer/songwriter Harmony Grisman and mandolinist David Grisman.[2][5] He is married to April Grisman.[6]
Career

In 2004, Grisman formed The American Drag with guitarist Will Evankovich, and bassist Joe Shaughnessy and the band released their debut album, American Drag, in 2005.[2][7]
In 2008, Grisman joined Petty Theft, a tribute band for the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers based in the San Francisco Bay Area.[8][9]
In 2009, The American Drag released their second album, Out of the Sky, with drummer John Mader and Eric Levy (Garaj Mahal). Jack Blades provided the CD cover shot, a circa World War I aviation photo taken by Blades's grandfather. The American Drag was invited to open two shows for Styx, one at the House of Blues in Los Angeles and another at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga.[2]
In October 2012, Village Music: Last of the Great Record Stores, a documentary film by Grisman and sister, Gillian Grisman debuted at the Mill Valley Film Festival.[10] The concert film tells the story of the birth of Village Music through the timeline of the final days of the closing of the store by its owner, John Goddard. The film documents Sweetwater Music Hall, and the music community in Mill Valley in the late 1960s through the closing of Village Music in 2007 and contains performances by Elvis Costello, Bob Weir, Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, John Sebastian, Dan Hicks, Huey Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Pop Staples, Jerry Garcia, and Carlos Santana.[11][7]
