If you need help with referencing, please see Referencing for beginners and Citing sources. This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia. Declined by Miminity 3 months ago. |
Submission declined on 24 July 2024 by Frost (talk). This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies. Declined by Frost 4 months ago. |
Montgomery Ballet is a non-profit ballet company located in Montgomery, Alabama.[1] It was founded in 1958 as a civic ballet group, and grew into a professional organization.
History
editMontgomery Ballet originated as the Montgomery Civic Ballet in 1958, initiated by a group of local dance enthusiasts committed to bringing classical ballet to the Montgomery area. The company operated as a civic ballet for several decades, focusing on local performances and dance education.
In 1984, Don Steffy was appointed Artistic Director, with Marylou Hume serving as Associate Director. Their leadership marked a pivotal moment in the organization's history. By 1987, the company transitioned into a professional ballet company, adopting the name Montgomery Ballet. This professionalization allowed the company to enhance its artistic quality and expand its reach within Alabama and the southeastern United States.
During this period, Montgomery Ballet was recognized by the Alabama State Council on the Arts as an "Advanced Arts Institution," a designation that enabled the company to participate in state-wide touring. The same year, it was named the "Official Performing Ballet Company of the City of Montgomery," reflecting its prominence within the local cultural community.
Programs and Outreach
editMontgomery Ballet has established several programs aimed at promoting ballet and the arts within the broader community. One of its long-standing initiatives is the LEAP (Linking Education and the Arts Program), which integrates ballet into local school curricula to foster an appreciation for the performing arts among students.
Another notable program is "Ballet and the Beasts," an annual outdoor performance held at the Montgomery Zoo. This event, which began during Don Steffy’s tenure, has become a community tradition, attracting audiences from across the region.
The company also resumed touring in recent years, bringing its performances to neighboring counties and involving local dancers in its productions. These efforts have broadened the company's impact, making ballet more accessible to communities with limited access to the arts.
Mission
editMontgomery Ballet's mission is to provide high-quality ballet performances and education while enriching the cultural landscape of Montgomery and surrounding areas. The organization remains committed to preserving the art of ballet and making it accessible to diverse audiences.
