Background

edit

During the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, fierce fighting took place around Ypenburg Airport. Dutch soldiers recaptured the airfield from the German airborne troops. In and around The Hague, 515 Dutch soldiers lost their lives, including 208 from the Regiment Garde Grenadiers and Jagers.

The inscription on the monument reads:

IN MEMORY OF OUR COMRADES-IN-ARMS
WHO IN THE DAYS OF MAY 1940 AND THEREAFTER
HERE AND OVERSEAS
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE FATHERLAND

Since 2010, an annual commemoration is held at this monument on May 10. Students from De Startbaan Elementary School have adopted the monument; children from the 7th grade take care of the monument and attend the commemoration.
