Early life

Muhammad Kamalud-Deen was one of the renowned scholar of twentieth century. He was born in 1983 to the Aragbaji family of Okekere area Ilorin. He studied Quran at an early stage under the Mallam Ahmod Tijani and Salahud-Deen both of baba ita compound Alore Ilorin and graduated in 1919.

Sheik Kamalud-Deen started his Da'wah after his teacher death in 1922. He established is Arabic school in 1926 in Lagos Nigeria. The Ilorin Branch was established in 1930. However, he began his reform activities in 1938 after returning from Hajj. Before this period, he follows the traditional method of teaching. He was the first person to introduce the use of benches, table, blackboard, a curriculum, uniforms, daily exercise and assemblies--pioneering these innovations in Southwest Nigeria. He also reduced the length of learning by organizing his pupils into classes, with promotional examinations conducted at the end of each terms. He introduced staging of Arabic dramas as part of extracurricular activities to enhance language acquisition among his student and promote Arabic education to the public. These presentation often took place in Ilorin during the annual Mauludin Nabiyyi celebration and when receiving eminent visitors. Among the popular plays was "Shylock," performed in 1947 at the Emir's palace, where Alhaji waliyy Alawaye acted the role of a lawyer. The same play also staged at Glover Hall in Lagos around the same time, where Alhaji Abdul-Salaam plays role of the usury dealer. Other notable plays from the 1940s included "Al-Asad wal Fa;r" and the story of miser. [1]

Sheik Kamalud-Deen was identified with unique and exceptional patience, it is normal believed that being pushed to wall is the limit of patience, however sheik demonstrated begin pushed to the wall should be the beginning of endurance journey. He suggested that instead of reaching aggressively after having been pushed to the wall, you should rather follow the wall around by times you complete one turns, the assailant would forsake you. The sage received numerous awards and honors both nationally and internationally, in recognition of his "distinguished international Islamic contributions to the development of scholarship and the advancement of mankind." He was awarded the MFR(1963) and OFR(1981) by the Federal Government of [2]Nigeria, the Kwara State Merit Award(1988), the ORSA(1992) award from Egyptian Government, and an honorary D.Litt.(1998) from University of Ilorin. In addition, the Nigeria Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies(NATAIS) honored him with a "Fellowship in Islamic Studies, Nigeria" (FISN) in 2002, HRM , the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, conferred upon him the tittle of the first Grand Mufti of Ilorin in 2005, the highest honor ever bestowed upon an Islamic scholar in the Emirate.
