Roderick Newall (born 1965) is a former British Army officer who beat his parents to death at their home in Jersey in 1987. Together with his younger brother Mark, he buried the bodies in woods. The bodies were found on 9 November 1993.[1] He was convicted of double murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1994.[2] He was released in 2007 after serving 13 years of his life sentence.[3]

Early life and education

The two brothers were boarders at Radley College, Oxfordshire. Roderick then trained as an army officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Arrest

Roderick Newall was arrested on a yacht at sea off Morocco in August 1992 and held in Gibraltar before being extradited to Jersey in April 1993.

Sustained media coverage

The murder was the subject of a 2013 book Murder in the Family: The Inside Story of the Jersey Murders by Jeremy Josephs (ISBN 9780957153882)[4] and featured in an episode of the Sky Crime series Killing Mum and Dad in 2022.[5] It was featured in a RedHanded podcast in 2023.[6]
