Life and career

edit

After completing her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto in 1993, Friedland went on to study photography at the Ontario College of Art and Design, graduating with honours in 1999.[1][2][3] She then completed her Masters of Fine Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology as a Sir Edmund Walker Scholar in 2001.[1][3]

Friedland has received grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts[1][3], and has exhibited across Canada, the United States and internationally.[1][3]

Friedland's work has been seen in numerous editions of The New York Review of Books and illustrated for a 2022 short story by Joyce Carol-Oates titled "The Return" in Harper's Magazine.[4] Her painting "Still Half Perfect" is featured on the cover art of The New York Review of Books October 5, 2023 issue.[5] Friedland's painting also serves as the cover art for Trabant by Stefan Sommer[6], L'exil est une histoire aux nombreuses pages by Patricio Sánchez-Rojas[7] and The Address Book by Steven Heighton.[8]

In 2019, Friedland transitioned away from her work as a photographer and began painting[2]. She refers to herself as a "recovering photographer", using her own photographs as source material for her paintings, often augmented by scenes from her imagination.[9]
