Neeraj Misra

Neeraj Misra is an Indian statistician and academic. He is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) and the founding Head of its Department of Statistics and Data Science. His research interests include statistical inference, reliability theory, stochastic orders, entropy estimation, and ranking and selection. He has held several academic and administrative positions at IIT Kanpur, including Dean of Academic Affairs, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Chairman of the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced).

Early life and education

Misra entered the campus of IIT Kanpur at the age of two and grew up on the campus during the institute's formative years. He attended school on the IIT Kanpur campus. His father was a non-teaching employee of the institute, and Misra has recalled that his early exposure to the institute's academic environment influenced his interest in mathematics. He has described his childhood at IIT Kanpur as a period in which learning took place without the intense academic competition associated with contemporary education. [1]

Misra received his bachelor's degree from Kanpur University in 1982. He obtained an M.Sc. in Statistics from IIT Kanpur in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Statistics from the same institution in 1991. His doctoral research concerned simultaneous selection of extreme populations and optimal decision rules. [2]

Academic career

Misra began his academic career as a lecturer at Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1990. He subsequently worked as a research fellow at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium before joining IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in 1996. [2]

At IIT Kanpur, he served as Assistant Professor from 1996 to 2002, Associate Professor from 2002 to 2005, and Professor from 2005 onward. [2]

He served as Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 2008 to 2011 and as Dean of Academic Affairs from 2015 to 2018. During his tenure as Dean, he was quoted by national newspapers on matters concerning academic administration at IIT Kanpur, including student academic performance and the institute's convocation. [3][4]

In 2014, Misra served as Chairman of the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) at IIT Kanpur. Contemporary Times of India reports identified him as JEE Chairman and quoted him regarding the results of JEE (Advanced) and the subsequent counselling process. [5][6]

In 2026, IIT Kanpur established the Department of Statistics and Data Science as a standalone academic department. Misra became its founding Head. [7]

Research

Misra's research is primarily in theoretical and applied statistics. His research interests include statistical inference, ranking and selection, stochastic orders and aging, entropy estimation, estimation under restricted parameter spaces, and reliability theory. [2][7]

His research has addressed problems involving selection among populations, estimation following selection, stochastic comparisons of lifetime distributions, entropy estimation, sample spacings, and statistical reliability.

A biographical profile published by IIT (BHU) Varanasi in connection with the 2026 International Conference on Mathematical Optimization, Theory and Applications describes his research interests as including Reliability Theory, Stochastic Orders, and Ranking and Selection Problems and records his publication and doctoral-supervision activities. [8]

Teaching and academic service

Misra has taught courses in probability, mathematical statistics, statistical inference, stochastic processes, multivariate analysis, non-parametric inference, statistical decision theory, and related areas at IIT Kanpur. [2]

His teaching has been featured by IIT Kanpur's Centre for Educational Research and Teaching Excellence in its Chalk Talk series, which discusses his classroom practices, interaction with students, and approach to teaching and mentoring. [9]

In 2016, he received a commendation from the selection committee of the Teaching Innovator Award for his work involving a flipped-classroom blended teaching approach. [2]

Misra has supervised doctoral students in statistics and related areas, several of whom have subsequently pursued academic careers at universities and research institutions in India and abroad. [8]

Awards and honours

Misra received the Jacob Wolfowitz Award in 2003 for theoretical advances in Mathematical and Management Sciences. [2]

He also received the C. L. Chandna Mathematics Award in 2003 for contributions to mathematics research and teaching. [2]

In 2023, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Association of Reliability and Statistics for contributions to Reliability Theory and Statistics. [2]

In 2025, he received the Gopal Das Bhandari Memorial Distinguished Teacher Award at IIT Kanpur. The award is given to an outstanding teacher selected by the graduating undergraduate students of the institute. [10]

He has also received the 1989 Batch Faculty Award at IIT Kanpur. [11]
