Neill James (January 6, 1895 – September 16, 1994) was an American travel writer, teacher, and philanthropist.

Life and Career

James was born in Grenada, Mississippi, in 1895. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Journalism[1] from Mississippi Industrial Institute in 1918, she began traveling extensively.[2]

James worked on the staff at two American embassies: in Tokyo, from 1924 to 1927, and in Berlin from 1928 to 1929.[2]

James left Japan just before the United States declared war on December 7, 1941, and began her decades-long exploration of Mexico. While living in Ajijic, Mexico, James collected years' worth of notes and journals into what became the popular travel series Petticoat Vagabond.[1]

A fictionalized version of James appears as the main character in the novel Kokio, by author Stephen P. Banks, published by Tellectual Press (April 5, 2016).[3]

Legacy

Neill James founded three libraries while living in Ajijic, Mexico: two public libraries for Mexicanos and a private library for local expatriates. She was also a founding member of the Lake Chapala Society. In 1990, James donated her estate to the Lake Chapala Society, which continues to serve as the headquarters for their activities in and around Lake Chapala.[4]
