Career

edit

Nich Brooks began his professional life by completing the Management trainee scheme at the tour operator TUI. He then remained in the aviation sector where he worked for Frontier Airline in Denver. This was his first concrete experience with competitive public transport. This job allowed him to truly understand the importance and the advantages of competition in the transport sector.

He then joined the railway sector thanks to his position as a Sales & Business Development at the new entrant long-distance passenger rail operator "Hamburg Cologne Express" (HKX) in Germany. This job brought him an insight into the reality behind the management and the environment in which new operators are brought to develop.

After that, he was Head of EU Affairs at the independent rail ticket vendor Trainline, where he gained experience in the political side of the sector by being responsible for governmental affairs in Brussels.

Nowadays, Nick Brooks is the Secretary General at ALLRAIL. He is the representative figure of the Association trying to push for a better European railway. He stated that rail should be more attractive and reach the goal of creating a real sustainable alternative to the car and other polluting means of transport. Via the development of a better highs-peed train network[2], he is convinced that rail can compete against low-cost airlines[3]. He is trying to achieve this by making passenger rail more competitive. He believes that the amelioration of services, so as the reduction of prices, will be only possible thanks to the opening of the railway market[4][5]. He thinks that Monopoly is what discourages operators from proposing better services as well as the principle of free competition[6].

ALLRAIL is the public affairs association that pushes for faster market opening in the passenger rail sector, with members from Europe and all across the world. It deals with political stakeholders such as national governments and the European Commission. It also has an active Communications department with frequent press releases, publications, events and social media postings[7].

Projects

edit

Nick Brooks serves as Co-Chair of the Global Ukraine Rail Task Force (GURTF), which is a volunteer working group of European and North American, UK and EU rail sector employees that helps the Ukrainian rail sector after Russia’s invasion of the country. For example by setting up a donation campaign that provides humanitarian aid for workers in the war[8][9].

Awards

edit

In his role at ALLRAIL, Brooks was also the winner of the 2023 German Rail Passengers Award issued by Germany’s rail passenger users association ProBahn[10]
