The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) was officially founded in 1960, following Nigeria's independence, to align with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its formation was solidified through the enactment of the Red Cross Act of 1961 by the National Assembly of Nigeria, which recognized the NRCS as an auxiliary to public authorities in humanitarian efforts during emergencies. Before its establishment as an independent entity, its operations were part of the British Red Cross during colonial times.
The NRCS has since grown to become a prominent humanitarian organization in Nigeria, with branches in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, mobilizing volunteers for disaster response, health services, and community support during crises like floods and armed conflicts. It is affiliated with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and works closely with both national and international partners to deliver its services.
