Draft:Nikola Katić (revolutionary)

Nikola Katić (Serbian Cyrillic: Никола Катић; Rogača, Kosmaj, Ottoman Empire, c. 1785-after 1815) was the nephew of the three Katić brothers (Janko, Marko and Stevan) who held the lofty rank of voivode in the last six months (April to September 1813) of the failed First Serbian Uprising. Nikola took over Stevan Katić's regiment when Stevan was killed on 24 April 1813 in a battle against the Turks and their allies the French.[1]

Biography

edit

Nikola was born in Rogača in the Belgrade nahija. He was related to the Katić brothers through his mother, the sister of Janko, Marko and Stevan.

On 24 April 1813 Janko Katić, the oldest and the last surviving brother died in battle a little before Karađorđe's Serbia fell.Karađorđe immediately installed Nikola in place of his uncle Janko.

Nikola came to the estate of his uncle and took his uncle's surname and command as voivode. Since the uprising was compromised there was no need for Nikola to prosecute operations against the Turks and their allies the French, except from the end of April till 21 September when Karađorđe's Serbia capitulated to the strongest prevailing forces of the day.

During this period in 'Karađorđe's Protocol recorded in one single directive to voivode Nikola Katić (No. 1448), in which he writes:

Cut off the heads of voivodes Petar Moler and Pavle Cukić, and send them to Topola!

That was written for all Karađorđe's loyal commanders because the two were insubordinate to such a degree that they compromised Karađorđe's battle plan.

After 1813, Nikola attended secret meetings in Rudovci where the question for a new uprising was raised. He was among the leaders who attended the Takovo Meeting. The attendees of the meeting were Iguman Avakum from Bogovac; pop Ranko Dmitrović from Rudovci; Milutin Savić; Garašanin; Arsenije Loma; Nikola Katić; Boza from Vukosavci; Aleksa Lazarević, priest from Šopić; etc.[2]

He is remembered as a hero of the successful Second Serbian Uprising. After the second uprising, little else is known about him and the date of his death can only be speculated.
