Open Source Trio is a jazz ensemble founded in 2010, known for its distinctive fusion of jazz, classical, electronica, and elements of Bulgarian folklore. The band’s modern approach to the jazz trio format reflects a broad stylistic versatility, aligning with the open-source nature of their creative process.
The trio released their debut album, Mirage, in early 2014 to critical acclaim, earning features on platforms like Radio6 (Netherlands), All About Jazz, Bulgarian National Radio, Radio Romania Cultural, Nova TV, bTV, and Radio Darik. Their music was also chosen as the soundtrack for the documentary Movers and Shakers of Contemporary Art. In 2015, Open Source Trio performed at various European festivals, collaborated with the Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra, and reached the finals of the EBU European Jazz Contest in Rotterdam.
Their second album, Altitude (2015), reflects the ensemble’s shared experiences, described by drummer Juri Schewe as capturing the "great heights" both literally—through their travels in the Rila Mountains and Alps—and figuratively, through intense, timeless performances on stage.
After a series of lineup changes, bassist Hristiyana Valkova joined in 2023, bringing a fresh perspective to the group. Alongside pianist Momchil Atanasoff and drummer Juri Schewe, the trio continues to explore new sonic landscapes that connect with listeners on both an emotional and intellectual level. Their music has been described as intricate, thought-provoking, and engaging.
Since 2023, Open Source Trio has been working on their third studio album, anticipated for release in 2025. Their latest single, Flow, is set to be released in November 2024.
